As the first hour of the programme came to a close, Sally teased what would be coming up next.
She said: “Still to come here on Breakfast, 80 years after 19 Lancaster bombers took part in the infamous Dambusters Raid, tonight a special anniversary fly past will take place over Lincolnshire to mark the occasion, we will have all of the details, that’s coming up at ten to eight this morning.”
However, BBC Breakfast viewers have been left seething with Sally for using the word “infamous” to describe the raids.
The word is used to describe something which is well known for a bad quality or deed.
Taking to social media, fans ripped into the seasoned presenter and demanded an apology.
One said: “So @SallyNugent refers to the Dambuster raids as “infamous”? Dresden perhaps, but not this. Clearly all our history is up for reinterpretation; that, or the BBC is illiterate?”
A second fumed: “@sallynugent ‘the infamous Dam Buster raids’? Really? I think an apology is called for. Infamous suggests there is something to be ashamed of. Nothing but pride here!”
“@SallyNugent I think you’ll find that “infamous” is an adjective, not a superlative,” said a third.
While a fourth said: “Bad phrasing their @sallynugent.”
Sally’s co-host Jon later corrected the script and referred to the event as “famous”.
The daring Dambusters raids on Nazi Germany were met with jubilation by Allied forces during World War Two.
Flying at just 60ft above water, under enemy fire and with only the moon to light their perilous way, the bravery of the 19 Lancaster bomber crews has never been matched in the history of air warfare.
Meanwhile, Sally was all smiles as she was pictured leaving the BBC Breakfast studios yesterday without her wedding ring after splitting from her husband.
She has put on a brave face in public following news emerging of her marriage breakdown.
BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One and iPlayer.
