I get my nails done every two weeks & just clocked the error I’ve been making – I’ve had to buy special gloves to fix it
A WOMAN who has been getting her nails done every two weeks admitted she had no idea about the major mistake she’s been making.
Jess Whitney, who lives in Singapore, didn’t realise there’s an extra step beauty fans should be taking before their nail appointments.
“My hands look like they’re completely shade to the rest of my body, she said, holding her hands next to her face to compare.
Jess’ fingers looked noticeably darker than the rest of her skin, and it’s all because of the UV nail lamps some salons use.
There’s even a clear line where her hands go into the machine.
“Now my hands are super, super dark and I didn’t realise that you have to wear sunscreen before you use these machines,” she said.
The beauty fan decided to take an extra precaution and buy a pair of special ‘anti UV fingerless gloves’ to help solve the problem.
She bought them from AliExpress, but notes that similar ones are available on Amazon too.
Speaking to Insider, Dr. Melissa Piliang, a board-certified dermatologist at Cleveland Clinic, revealed beauty fans should be taking the extra precaution at all their appointments.
“The ultraviolet light from those little machines in the nail salon produce UV light just like the sun and the tanning beds, and thereby could potentially increase risk of skin cancer,” she said.
And it’s not the UV light, Melissa continued: “For people doing manicures with LED lights, I would recommend the same precautions — UV gloves and sunscreen.”
After sharing the video on TikTok, Melissa said she might start getting her nails done less often and viewers agreed they had no idea they should be protecting their hands.
One commented: “Wow! I never knew this, thank you!”
And a second said: “This is what happened to me as well, took forever to get my hands back to normal.”
“Omg I didn’t realise this, nail salons should remind you,” another said.
