People say my son’s name sounds like a pet or bird – and I ‘won’t get away with something so ridiculous without mockery’
A WOMAN has been having cold feet about her son’s name after she was told it would make him a “mockery.”
Even more insult was added to injury when other commenters said it was better suited for a pet or a bird.
She took her despair to an online forum for some clarity and reassurance but was left with little of either.
Commenters to her Reddit post were typically forthright.
The expectant mom explained her dilemma.
“I’m pregnant with a boy and my partner and I both like this name.”
They had decided upon Peregrin or Peregrine, the spelling was still up for discussion.
But there was some doubt about the name.
“We are both hesitant to actually use it because we’re afraid it’s too ‘out there,'” she said.
It had Tolkien links, which was an attractive pull for this mom and dad.
“There is the Lord of the Rings association. Even though we both love [it] more than we’d ever admit to others, pulling an obscure name from it for our child is not my intention,” she wrote.
She was willing to admit it was an unusual name.
“I just genuinely like the name. It may be weird to others.
“Our first son has a classic Old English name that is somewhere in the 400s in popularity. I’m looking for some thoughts from internet strangers,” she said.
She certainly got that and many felt compelled to give their opinion.
But Peregrin/Peregrine rather divided opinion.
This guy was a fan: “[I] think it doesn’t sound like a name but on the other, if I met a kid named Peregrine I would think wow that’s interesting.”
However, this commenter was at the other end of the spectrum.
“Are you an English lord and lady? No? Then you’re not posh enough to get away with using a name that ridiculous without a high likelihood of mockery,” he said.
There was a mixed response from this person: “It’s super cool, but better suited for a pet, in my honest opinion.”
It was a similar view from this person: “I may be in the minority but if I saw peregrin, I’m only familiar with a peregrine falcon, so I would automatically assume the name had a typo.”
But there was one super fan concluding her post:
“I really love the name Peregrin. It just sounds really rugged, noble, and wise,” they said.
