Glasgow pub sealed off after ‘man walked in and set himself on fire’ in major incident
A PUB has been sealed off amid reports a man walked in and “set himself on fire”.
Officers swarmed the Railway Tavern in the East End of Glasgow shortly before 2pm this afternoon.
Nearby Killin Street has been locked down with tape across the road blocking access to the pub.
It is understood that a man entered the pub with a flammable liquid before setting himself on fire.
It is not yet known if the incident was deliberate or accidental.
He was rushed to hospital in an ambulance after the flames were extinguished.
A stunned eyewitness said: “A guy walked into the pub and either accidentally set himself on fire because he was trying to set fire to the pub, or he set fire to himself.
“I saw the ambulance going away. He must have been getting taken to hospital.
“That’s just an old man’s pub. It’s horrible.”
And another witness added: “The man was ejected from the pub. Apparently, he came back in, poured a flammable liquid on himself and set himself on fire.
“He was dragged out of the pub and treated outside under some trees.
“He was given a three-car police escort to hospital. There were officers inside the ambulance and police cars at the front and back of the ambulance.”
Images from the scene show a number of cops standing guard on the street and two large plastic bottles lying at the entrance of the beer garden.
At least ten police vehicles – including large vans and cars – were spotted parked directly across from the bar on Shettleston Road.
An ambulance was also seen parked along Killin Street while Scottish Fire and Rescue crews attended.
At least two fire engines were seen on Shettleston Road.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were requested at 2.15pm on Tuesday, 16 May to assist our emergency service partners at a premises on Glasgow’s Shettleston Road.
“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances to the area, where firefighters worked to support their partners before leaving the scene.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2.10pm on Tuesday, 16 May, 2023, police were called to a report of a fire at a premises in the Shettleston Road area of Glasgow.
“Emergency services remain in attendance and a man is being treated by paramedics at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing.”
