Waterloo Road fans thrilled as former cast member makes surprise return after 16 years
WATERLOO Road fans are jumping for joy after one of the show’s most legendary characters made a surprise comeback.
Viewers were thrilled to see former deputy head teacher Andrew Treneman – played by Jamie Glover – return to the BBC drama 16 years after he quit.
But not everyone was happy to see Andrew walk through the doors of the notorious fictional high school, as current head Kim Campbell was furious.
Kim, portrayed by Angela Griffin, has history with Andrew, having previously worked at Waterloo Road with him in the noughties.
Taking to Twitter, fans couldn’t hide their excitement at the character’s reprisal.
One tweeted: “Oh my god Andrew Treneman!”
Another added: “Seeing Andrew and Kim on screen together again makes me feel too many emotions!”
A third wrote: “Andrew’s voice is so nostalgic.”
And a fourth chimed in: “The andrew X kim car park scenes remind me of the OG when she used to offer him a lift and he said he’d just get the bus instead!”
Actor Jamie was among the original Waterloo Road cast when the drama first hit screens in 2006.
His character, Andrew, was an English teacher and had quit a posh grammar school to take on the job of deputy head at Waterloo Road.
Andrew found himself working with teacher Kim (Angela Griffin) and he gradually became infatuated with her.
By the end of series two, Andrew and Kim sailed off in the sunset together to teach at a school in Rwanda.
But their romance didn’t last.
Kim returned to Waterloo Road in 2009 for series four with a smugged baby in tow, but claimed she and Andrew had never become more than friends.
He made a surprise appearance at the end of term party and asked her to return to Rwanda with him.
But as he made his big comeback at Waterloo Road as a Schools Against Knife Crime representative in Tuesday’s show, it was clear they never reunited in East Africa.
Kim told him: “The last time I saw you was at the end of term party. The one with the fireworks where you were all, ‘Oh, I just can’t leave!’
“Do you remember that? And then you left anyway. Straight back to Rwanda.”
Andrew tells her: “I asked you to come?”
But Kim spat back: “And you knew that I couldn’t come.”
It then transpired that Andrew had eventually returned to the UK and had been working at a school close by to Waterloo Road.
At the end of the episode, which was the first of series 11, Andrew attempted to apologise to Kim.
But she told him: “I don’t need an apology from you to have a working relationship.
“If you want to help my school that’s fine, keep on talking. But anything else – it’s too late.”
- Waterloo Road continues 8pm, BBC1, Tuesday June 23.
