Two tourists killed at top holiday hotspot in separate brutal attacks including machete rampage
TWO tourists have been killed in a popular holiday hotspot in less than a week in separate brutal attacks.
The city of Oaxaca in Mexico has been plagued by violence in recent weeks, including a horror machete rampage.
A Canadian national was killed in the relaxed beach town of Puerto Escondido, authorities revealed on Tuesday.
He was found dead in a car with a bullet wound on Monday in the area popular with surfers, according to local media.
Investigators launched a probe into the man’s death but gave no indication of the motive for the murder.
But holidaymakers are on high alert, as it is the second killing in the city in less than a week.
Tourist Benjamin Gamond, from Argentina, was brutally attacked with a machete on May 12 in the nearby coastal area of Chacahua.
He was rushed to a Mexico City hospital before he tragically passed away on Monday, prosecutors said.
Officials said the machete-wielding suspect, who is also accused of assaulting two other Argentine tourists who survived, is being held on suspicion of murder.
Benjamin’s relative claimed he had died “a hero” during a struggle in a post on social media, Reuters reported.
Oaxaca has been rocked by the recent spate of killings, as the city has significantly lower crime rates than most states in Mexico.
