Huge ITV period drama set for big return as bosses try to get famous cast back
A HUGE ITV period drama is set for a big return as bosses try to get its famous cast back together.
Downton Abbey is set to make its television comeback almost eight years after it ended.
The hugely popular show, which aired for six series on ITV, followed the luxurious lives of the Crawley family, fictional aristocrats set in 20th century England.
Its popularity saw it make the big screens with two films based on the original series being released in recent years.
The Mail on Sunday report Downton’s production company is hoping to attract all its previous stars back.
It had an A-list cast including the likes of Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery and Joanne Froggatt.
An insider told the paper: “There is a plan which is in development and there is a lot of excitement about.
“There is casting taking place, and it would be great if all of the big stars can return. People loved Downton. It became a British institution and it has been much missed since it left our screens.
“There is huge excitement around this project. It was a Sunday night favourite and got huge viewing figures. There has been very little to compete with it ever since it ended.”
Downton Abbey could be back on screen by the end of next year, depending on the cast’s availability.
A spokesperson for ITV declined to comment when contacted.
Although not entirely based on any particular true story, Downton Abbey is meant to be as historically accurate as possible.
The castle in which the Crawley family lives on the show is a real estate in the United Kingdom known as the Highclere Castle.
In September of 2019, a feature film based on the television series premiered.
Also created by Julian Fellowes, the Downtown Abbey film continued the storyline from the television show with many original cast members reprising their roles.
The sequel to the film, Downton Abbey: A New Era, saw a United Kingdom release in April of 2022.
