MANY pet owners will know just how expensive a trip to the vets can be.

But if you don’t want to spend a small fortune on vet bills, then you may just be in luck…because a vet named Ben Simpson-Vernon has revealed the five dog breeds that are prone to health problems.

In a clip shared to TikTok, he begins: “This is a really tough question to answer because all breeds have some health problems they’re a bit more prone to than other breeds of dog.

“A good starting point is to pick a breed that doesn’t have an exaggerated appearance because extremes of body size and shape can lead to problems.”

He continues: “So that means steering clear of giant breeds (Cane Corso), tiny tea cup breeds (teacup Chihuahua), those with excessive wrinkly skin (Shar-pei), ones with a very long back (Dachshund) and flat-faced breeds (Bulldog).”

Ben goes on to explain that one breed that many people consider to be amongst the healthiest is the Jack Russell.

“They aren’t prone to many diseases and they generally have a long life expectancy,” he claims.

“Studies have also found that Jack Russell’s in the UK have a similar diversity in their genes to crossbreed dogs i.e. they’re not very in-bred.

“For the most part, this is probably because prior to 2016, the Kennel Club didn’t recognise the Jack Russell Terrier as a breed.”

It wasn’t long before the post went viral and racked up several comments, with many pet owners eager to offer their opinions.

“The ones that haven’t changed loads in 100 yrs,” noted one.

A second penned: “Vet told us that mixed breeds live longer because of gene diversity.”

A third commented: “Oh my goodness yes. Here in the US Jacks live forever. Almost all of the over 15y dogs in our practice are Jack Russell’s. Bitey ’till the end!”

Meanwhile, a fourth added: “Yaaayyy!! So happy you did something on the Jack Russell! They’re the best dogs in the world!”

A further chimed in: “I think my Jack will outlive me.

“Such a huge character and zero vet bills!

“She’s tiny with a huge personality, just love her.”

Another wrote: “Our two family Jack’s will be turning 14 this year and have had no health problems.”

And one more added: “My Jack is awesome! Best dog ever!”
