Temperatures are expected to reach 20C in Glasgow, Scotland, this afternoon, according to the Met Office.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country is predicted to see peaks in the high-teens, with 19C across most western parts including Portsmouth.

It comes after forecasters predicted a “fine, dry” weekend due to a “jet stream” and an area of high pressure keeping conditions settled.

Paul Gunderson, chief forecaster at the Met, said: “The jet stream sitting to the north of the UK is holding unsettled weather systems at bay and allowing high pressure to dominate bringing fine weather to the vast majority of the UK.

“The current position of the high-pressure means we will see a westerly airflow over the UK, a cooler direction than if air was being brought up from the South, and areas such as Spain or Africa.

“Therefore, we are not likely to reach heatwave conditions, but temperatures will still be warm reaching the low 20Cs for many, particularly in the South West and southern Wales.”

Yesterday’s climes reach 24.3C as Brits flocked to the beach to enjoy the sunshine.

Meanwhile, drivers were issued a warning after a pair of sunglasses caused a car fire, melting a gaping hole in a vehicle’s windshield by reflecting the sun’s rays.

However, the Met expects a cooler period in the coming days.

Tonight’s forecast predicts: “Most areas dry with clear skies, although the far north remaining cloudy and eastern England seeing cloud move in.

“Chilly, with a touch of frost in prone spots.”

Tomorrow is set to see more cloud, keeping many areas “cool”, while later in the week there are likely to be “high temperatures in the West” but chillier weather in eastern parts due to a “breeze off the North Sea“.
