Urgent vet warning – small signs that your dog might be in pain and why it could lead to emergency surgery
A VET has issued an urgent warning to dog owners over small signs their pet might be in pain that could go unnoticed.
Dr Susie Kruse shared a video on TikTok explaining there are five warning signs your young dog might be developing hip or joint problems.
The number one sign is your dog avoiding getting up on furniture or climbing the stairs as it could mean they are in pain.
Another one is a strange sound coming from their joints.
“You might notice a clicking sound coming from their joints when they’re getting or down or walking around,” Dr Kruse said.
Another warning sign is when your pet is “bunny hopping” which is when your dog prefers to hop rather than run normally.
Any kind of limp either in the front legs or back legs could also be a sign your pooch is suffering.
And lastly if your pup doesn’t want to run and play, don’t think it’s lazy- it might be in pain.
Dr Kruse noted: “If you take your young puppy out for a walk and they don’t want to exercise, they just want to turn around and go home, that could be a sign of a problem.”
The vet highlighted the importance of prevention and urged owners of certain breeds to take extra care.
She said: “It’s always going to be best if you start with prevention early if you’re noticing any concerns in terms of joint problems, get your dog on a natural joint supplement early.
“Especially if you have got a breed that’s prone to hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia like your German Shepherds or labradors.”
