I’m a microbiologist & there’s a clever method to remove grotty mould from walls – and why bleach is your worst enemy
A MICROBIOLOGIST has unveiled the best way to remove mould from even the most stubborn surfaces.
People swear by using baking soda and lemon, mould remover sprays and ammonia to get rid of the pesky fungus.
But one man, an expert in fact, has shared that the best way to ensure it’s gone for good is by using distilled white vinegar.
Taking to social media, Wes first shared a clip of a woman cutting the seal from her bathroom.
She could be heard saying: “I would bleach the mould, it would appear to go away, and then it would be back in like two days…”
Wes then appeared on screen to share why bleach is your worst enemy when it comes to removing mould.
“Hi, I’m a microbiologist and the reason that the mould didn’t go away when you treated it with bleach is because mould doesn’t get killed by bleach very well,” he simply stated.
He went on to share that bleach isn’t a good way to disinfect things that are “contaminated with mould”.
“So dishes that you left out on the counter and forgot about that grew mould, old showers, sinks, those things are not clean very well by bleach to get rid of mould,” he continued.
“If you want to get rid of mould, use undiluted, white distilled vinegar.”
TikTok user @microbiologywes then explained that the best way to use this is by spraying it on the surface that has mould, such as a dish, and leave it for about an hour.
Then, you can rinse it off with water and “you’re good to go”.
Wes went on to share that the woman took the right step in removing and replacing the caulk in her bathroom as it was too far gone.
“A lot of that caulk was contaminated and caulk is a porous material, meaning it’s not hardened and absorbs stuff,” he said.
“This makes it easier for the spores from the mould to actually survive longer and not be killed by any disinfectants.”
“Vinegar for mould. 10% bleach or 70% alcohol for bacteria and viruses. And let the surface air dry. Don’t wipe it dry,” he added in the caption.
People were quick to comment as one person wrote: “Currently bleaching my bathroom. But thanks, now I know for the next time,” to which he replied: “In my opinion bleach is overkill for 90% of things. If you do use it, dilute it 1:10. Because pure bleach is way stronger than anyone ever needs.”
Another said: “Another day in TikTok school, thank you Mr. Microbiologist”.
While a third added: “I clean everything with vinegar and rubbing alcohol”.
