Our village made famous by TV show is one of UK’s most coveted places to live – but it hides an annoying secret

THIS village made famous by a TV show hides an annoying secret despite being a coveted place to live.

Grantchester, Cambridgeshire, which appeared in the ITV drama of the same name, is picturesque and well situated near to Cambridge city centre, but is missing one key thing.

Despite all its good points, which have seen properties sell for more than £1 million recently, the village has no shops whatsoever.

Residents wanting to pop out for a pint of milk or a loaf of bread will have to leave the village and walk to the Shell garage or Waitrose more than a mile away.

Either that or they can trek cross country for 25 minutes to a Sainsbury’s.

One reviewer on TripAdvisor wrote: “Quaint village and nice to walk along by the river, but that was all.”

Another added: “It has at least three pubs and two churches and is well thought of as a posh place to live but in reality it has no amenities whatsoever.

“You need a car or lots of walking time to go for…a pint of milk.

“Otherwise quite charming.”

Others, though, praised is a “beautiful” and “lovely” despite the lack of shopping options.

However, you’re unlikely to go hungry or thirsty there as, despite the lack of shops, there are no fewer than four pubs serving the small community.

The Blue Ball dates back to 1767, while the Rupert Brooke bears the name of the famous First World War poet.

Meanwhile, the Red Lion sits just next to the local meadows and VERA The green Man says it offers delicious food in “perfect quintessential English surroundings”.

The rest of the village is quaint and looks straight out of the 1950’s, making it a fitting setting for the ITV hit.

It is dotted with thatched roofs and picture-postcard cottages, all dominated by the high tower of the local church, though the current vicar is not believed to spend his spare time solving crimes.
