I love my daughter’s name but the way my husband pronounces it sounds really rude – now I’m worried she’s doomed
A WOMAN has shared her agony over the name she has chosen for her daughter.
She admitted a lot of her anxiety was over the way her husband pronounced the baby’s name.
As far as she was concerned, it sounded rude, and was worried her daughter was doomed with her chosen moniker.
She took her dilemma to the online forum Reddit for some guidance and reassurance over the name, Aurelia.
But she achieved little of either in response to her post.
The mom outlined the problem.
“I have always loved this name and it’s at the top of my list,” she said.
“But when I mentioned it to my husband he pronounced it Aw-rail-ya and I heard ‘I’ll rail ya,'” which in slang-terms means to scold someone using abusive language.
This was the beginning of some second thoughts on her part.
“I pronounce it Aw-rell-ee-yah so the whole missing syllable caught me unawares as well.”
“Suddenly I don’t know that I love it anymore,” she confessed. “Is my husband a weirdo or should I be crossing this one off of the list?”
If she was concerned about her husband’s pronouncement, then Redditors added another dimension of concern in their reaction to her post.
Many made clear the name reminded them of one thing, and one thing only.
“Aurelia reminds me of areola,” said one commenter.
It was a sentiment repeated again by this person: “I once thought I heard someone screaming ‘areola’ until I figured out it was a toddler named Ariella. Unfortunate.”
More boob references from this commenter too: “My last name rhymes with areola and yes people notice. They would with this name as well.”
At least her husband’s pronunciation did not match this one: “I will say that I have always disliked Aurelia for this reason. It’s the same with Ophelia, all I hear is ‘I’ll feel ya.'”
But there were also a few fans.
“Personally, this is my favorite girl’s name and my number one choice that I will 100 percent use if I have a girl. I have adored it since the moment I heard it.”
Finally, another who really liked it.
“I pronounce it like Uh-ray-lee-uh so I don’t hear it like that but I know Uh-rail-yuh is an option. It has too many pronunciation options for me personally, but it is beautiful,” they said.
