I’m ginger and could never get a summer glow so I bake on sunbeds instead…people warn me but I don’t care, I want a tan
A WOMAN has revealed that she is a natural ginger and never used to get a tan, so decided to give sunbeds a try.
19-year-old Jen Simmonds explained that she now goes on sunbeds for 15 minutes at a time and uses accelerator creams to get a golden glow.
Such creams contain specific ingredients that are absorbed into the skin to encourage the movement of melanocytes to the surface of the skin, maximising the tanning potential of a sunbed session.
But despite the dangers and risks involved with such tanning practices, the beauty fan recently took to social media to discuss her tanning routine.
Jen took to TikTok to show off her tanning journey, as she posted her clip with the caption ‘Who said gingers can’t tan?’ and said: “Before sunbeds as a natural ginge.”
Jen shared a variety of pictures of her, prior to going on sunbeds.
The young woman, who dyes her hair blonde was visibly pale but she then shared a variety of images after going on sunbeds, showing off her bronzed glow.
She confirmed that she goes on sunbeds for 15 minutes at a time and uses tanning accelerator creams to boost her glow.
Jen’s clip has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly amassed a whopping 67,100 views.
It has 1,359 likes, 48 comments, 107 saves and 10 shares.
While some were eager to comment on Jen’s lovely tan, others were eager to express the dangers of such tanning activities.
But Jen didn’t seem phased by the comments as she expressed her love of being tanned.
One person said: “Don’t go, cancer incoming” to which Jen responded “tan incoming.”
Another added: “Gingers have a genetic mutation that puts them at very high risk for melanoma, don’t do it.”
A third commented: “1. you look beautiful, I agree. 2. a tan isn’t worth getting skin cancer for, please stay out of the sunbed.”
Whilst someone else simply commented: “Skin cancer” to which Jen replied “tan” with a heart-eye emoji.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), sunbeds are as dangerous as smoking.
Like the sun, they give out harmful UV rays that damage the DNA in your skin cells.
Over time, this may lead to malignant melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer – studies have shown.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), there is significant evidence to show that using tanning beds causes melanoma.
They report that sunbeds increase the risk of skin cancer by up to 20 per cent, and also state that they have no positive benefits to our health.
Cancer Research backed this statistic, adding that “there is no such thing as a safe tan from UV radiation”.
