I’m a hair whizz – here’s the four mistakes you’re making that are drying out your locks
A HAIR whizz has revealed the four mistakes you’re making that could be wrecking your hair.
Expert trichologist Stephanie Sey, from shampoo and haircare brand Nizoral, warns the errors could be causing dandruff.
From hitting the gym to what you eat, there are a number of issues that could be causing issues with your locks.
Here, Stephanie reveals the four things that could be leaving you with a dry and itchy scalp…
Leaving your hair wet after washing
Stephanie Sey explains: “Leaving your hair wet after washing can
create a great breeding ground for bacteria, which in turn can exacerbate dandruff.
“It’s important to ensure that you dry your hair completely after washing to avoid any unwanted dandruff flare ups.”
Not washing the hair after exercise
“Exercise cannot directly cause dandruff”, Stephanie says.
“However, what can cause the problem is the sweat that
you generate from working out and being in a humid gym environment.
“To help avoid any dandruff flare ups after a workout, make sure to rinse the hair from any sweat.
“Even if you don’t have time to wash your hair fully, this will help get rid of the salt residue and bacteria on the scalp.”
Using oils
Stephanie also warns that some products you think are helping your hair could also be making it worse.
She reveals: “Many people use oils to combat the supposed dryness of the scalp, however this can make things worse.
“If you find your scalp is dry and are looking for ways to address this, you can try using something soothing like aloe vera gel directly on the scalp or a hydrosol like rosewater.
“A hot oil treatment just before you wash your hair could also go a long way to help rebalance the scalp.”
Stephanie adds: “But if you are suffering from reoccurring dandruff flare ups, it’s certainly beneficial to be using a daily dandruff prevention shampoo.
“The Nizoral Daily Prevent Shampoo helps keep dandruff flare ups at bay, to help break the start stop cycle of dandruff déjà vu.”
Poor diet
“When it comes to dandruff, diet is also key”, Stephanie says.
“The hair is the very last system in our body to receive
nutrients (as it is one of the least essential) so, if the body is not receiving adequate nutrients, the hair will likely be affected.
“Make sure you’re eating a balanced diet comprising of carbohydrates, healthy fats, proteins, fibre, vitamins, and minerals.
“Eating a diet that is rich in fresh vegetables, meat and
fruit supports growth for thick, full hair.”
