My ‘lazy girl’ sushi recipe is cheap and easy – a Trader Joe’s fan favorite is the most important part
A FOOD expert has shared a five-ingredient recipe you can finish in just 20 minutes.
When you’re craving sushi and don’t want to go to the store, take matters into your own hands.
Sarah (@dontskipthecookie) demonstrated each step of the healthy, low-carb lunch.
She started off the video with a pack of Nori seaweed from Costco, saying: “Take them out and put them into an adorable little rectangle, layering them one over the other.”
The second layer is wild-caught smoked salmon, another bargain Costco deal.
A layer of cream cheese follows, but be sure not to overdo it. Sarah said you can use whatever brand you like best.
She added: “I opt for dairy free. This one I actually made myself. It’s really simple: just cashews, lemon juice, and a little bit of water.
“My other favorite brand of dairy-free cream cheese is Miyoko’s because it has really simple ingredients.”
The next ingredient, Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel seasoning, is the most important part and should be sprinkled on generously.
“The bagel seasoning gives it that sushi, sesame flavor,” she said.
Thinly sliced cucumber goes on top of the cream cheese, though Sarah uses thinly sliced zucchini in this video as a substitute.
Either way, place the slices horizontally to make rolling the seaweed easier.
“Totally optional but a little avocado for me is a must. If you don’t like cream cheese, you could just do avocado, or vice versa,” she added.
Sriracha is another optional ingredient for foodies who enjoy sushi with a spicy kick.
With all of the ingredients in place, there’s only one thing left to do: roll. Sarah warned that though it may seem stressful, it’ll be okay.
She said: “It doesn’t have to be perfect. We’re going to get a good hold on our seaweed. With our fingers, we’re going to roll tightly, and then push down with your fingers.”
She continued to slowly roll the sushi, pressing down firmly with her fingers along the way to keep the ingredients from spilling out.
“The smoked salmon is a little bit moist, so you kind of want to press down firmly so it will adhere to the salmon better.”
Once your roll is complete, use a sharp knife to cut it gently but firmly into bite-sized pieces.
Finally, don’t forget your dipping sauce. Sarah suggests soy sauce, but if you want to keep it paleo and soy-free, use coconut aminos mixed with ginger powder.
