UK weather forecast: Heavy rain and thunder to hit Brits today – but there’s hope ahead for clear skies this weekend
HEAVY rain and thunderstorms are set to hit today – but Brits will enjoy clear skies this weekend.
Scattered showers are expected across much of the UK on Thursday, initially in the Midlands and northern England, before becoming more widespread into the afternoon.
The Met Office has warned these showers will be “heavy and perhaps thundery” for many.
But temperatures are expected to remain warm across the country, with the mercury expected to reach 27C in the south east.
A spokesman for the Met Office said: “There will be some cloud around, but most places will start largely dry and bright.
“Some showers will quickly develop across the Midlands and northern England before becoming more widespread as we go into the afternoon.
“There will be a good chance of catching showers across England, Wales and some parts of Northern Ireland. Though those showers will be hit and miss and there will be some decent sunshine in between.
“The best of the sunshine will be towards the far south and parts of northern Scotland. Temperatures are likely to be a touch higher than on Wednesday.
“For some places to the north east and coastal parts it will be a bit lower than Wednesday, with a breeze coming in from the North Sea keeping temperatures down a little bit, but still relatively warm.”
Friday will bring “a dry day for many with hazy sunshine”, with temperatures particularly high in the South East, but conditions will be cloudier across northern areas of England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
Clear skies will be welcomed over the weekend, despite some outbreaks of rain in the North East, with the forecaster predicting “plenty of sunshine” for most of the UK.
It comes after soggy Glastonbury crowds were hit by rain on Wednesday as they arrived ahead of the festival commencing on Friday.
Revellers were seen adorning plastic ponchos and running for cover after becoming stuck in heavy showers.
