VSP TO STAGE THE REAL “THRILLA IN MANILA”
HCMC Vietnam December 2, 2021
Boxing is back in a biggest possible way this month in Manila, where the Ultimate Knockout Challenge promises to showcase the best fight card ever seen in the Philippines.
Vietnam based VSP Promotions will stage an astounding fight card this weekend, featuring many of the Philippines most talented boxers. Former Olympian and unbeaten pro Charly Suarez, the country’s hottest young prospect “Wonder Boy” Carl Jammes Martin, recent world title challenger Michael Dasmariñas, and national champion Mark Anthony Geraldo are just some of the big names to grace centre ring this weekend. The loaded card which consists of 13 cracking bouts, will take place at The Flash Grand Ballroom of the Elorde Sports Complex in Parañaque City on Saturday December 4. This iconic event is proudly supported and sponsored by VSP Boxing and their Philippines partners, the Elorde group.
Take note fight fans, and remember you read it here first!
Charly Suarez is far and away THE BEST BOXER that the Philippines has produced since Manny Pacquiao, and he looks destined for world title glory. He headlines the main event where he will trade leather with undefeated youngster Delmar Pellio. The 33-year-old Suarez, who competed for the Philippines in the 2016 Rio Olympics, has had an impressive year with four wins already in 2021. He beat the likes of quality locals Jon Jon Estrada, Pablito Canada, Eduardo Mancito and Lorence Rosas without dropping a single round. The “Kings Warrior” will tackle a strong and confident southpaw in Pellio, who has been sparring in outstanding form leading up to Saturday’s main event. Suarez boasts 8-0 with six knockouts, while Pellio is 9-0 with four knockouts. If Suarez can pull off another impressive win this weekend, he has been promised a shot at the WBA regional title in early 2022.
The “Wonder Boy” Carl Jammes Martin (17-0, 15 KOs), embraces his sternest test to date when he faces the very experienced Mark Anthony Geraldo (38-9-3, 19 KOs) for the Philippine super bantamweight title. The 22-year-old Martin is widely considered as the future pinoy star on the world boxing scene, and as a southpaw with speed, is already drawing the obvious comparisons with Pacquiao. And he has certainly lived up to the early hype and star billing, remaining unbeaten whilst delivering a 88 percent knockout ratio in his path of destruction. The national title fight may prove to be his acid test, where he’ll be tested against a very serious and legitimate opponent in Geraldo.
Mark Anthony Geraldo has fought some of the very best in boxing’s lower weight divisions, and is the only boxer who has delivered a loss to current International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight king Jerwin Ancajas. Geraldo also owns a win over former world title challenger Hirofumi Mukai.
Yet another big name that will generate huge interest this weekend is “Hot and Spicy” Michael Dasmariñas (30-3-1, 20 KOs), who will slug it out with fellow former world title challenger Ernesto Saulong (22-7-2, 9 KOs). Dasmariñas is looking to bounce back after suffering a third round knockout loss to IBF and World Boxing Association (WBA) bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue on June 19, 2021.
Saulong also wants to return to his winning ways and end a three-fight losing streak against top notch opponents. Saulong fought for a world title in 2018, but lost to then IBF super bantamweight titleholder Ryosuke Iwasa.
The stacked undercard contains many of the Philippines’ best, and there are plenty of bouts that will surely divide opinions:
Jon Jon Estrada (13-8-1, 12 KOs) faces Jestine Tesoro (5-2, 2 KOs), Roy Sumugat (12-11-1, 6 KOs) takes on Juanito Paredes (8-7-1, 3 KOs), Ranelio Quizo (8-2, 1 KO) is fighting Marvilo Aballe (8-1-2, 3 KOs), Lorenz Ladrada (10-2-1, 3 KOs) squares off with Jason Buenaobra (7-5-3, 3 KOs), Virgel Vitor (15-2, 9 KOs) faces off with Lorence Rosas (9-6-2, 3 KOs), Jules Victoriano (9-4, 6 KOs) exchange blows with Jethro Pabustan (30-8-6, 9 KOs), Jimmy Borbon (7-9-4, 4 KOs) is up against Leonardo Donorio (17-18-3, 11 KOs), Al Toyogon (10-6-1, 6 KOs) takes on Lloyd Jardeliza (8-11-4, 6 KOs), Jufel Salin (3-3, 3 KOs) locks horns with Kresler Tenorio (3-4, 1 KO) and Jonniel Laurente (2-0, 1 KO) kicks off the show against Marlon Bacalando (0-3-3).
