Latest Aaron Rodgers News Is Exactly What Bears Want To Hear
The NFL world is once again being held hostage by Aaron Rodgers as he decides what he wants to do. It’s incredible how similar the end of his career has become to Brett Favre. Every off-season, it was about whether he would retire or come back. People got tired of it quickly. It is happening again with Rodgers. He promised a resolution soon, but thus far, nothing has happened. Many consider him the biggest quarterback domino that needs to fall before other decisions are made. Will he stay or go?
Adam Schefter of ESPN appeared on Sportscenter to talk about the subject. While no decision has been made yet, he did make one thing clear. There are two outcomes to this scenario, and neither of them involves him being the quarterback for the Packers again in 2023.
“My sense is ultimately it will come down to whether he wants to play elsewhere, which would be really the New York Jets, or whether he wants to retire. To me, those are the two most logical options and the two most likely scenarios here.”
If you’re the Chicago Bears, this outcome is close to ideal. Rodgers going to the Jets means he won’t land with a team picking in the top 10 of the draft, increasing their trade leverage for the #1 pick. If he retires, that leaves the Packers with loads of dead cap and no draft picks for trading him.
Aaron Rodgers is finally facing football mortality.
Many considered him the unquestioned greatest ever for a long stretch of his career. However, opinions have shifted in the past few years. While his individual success remains undeniable, his inability to get the Packers over the hump to another Super Bowl is beginning to dull the luster of his legacy. He won the Super Bowl in 2010. Since then, he’s reached the NFC championship four times and lost all four. The last one was easily the worst since Green Bay had the best record in the conference and was at home.
The following year Aaron Rodgers lost at home again, this time to Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers. If that weren’t bad enough, he squandered a chance at a playoff berth in January by losing to Detroit (again at home) 20-16. The last pass he threw was an interception to rookie safety Kerby Joseph. If that is the last image Packers fans will have of him, it’s horribly fitting. Bears fans won’t have any sympathy for him. They’re happy just to see him go at this point. Him helping their team on the way out would be a bonus.
