The United Kingdom''s wait for spring continues following heavy snowfall overnight on Tuesday. Temperature fell to -10 degrees in some parts of the country, making it the coldest winter night in five years. The Met Office issued a severe weather warning in London, Scotland, the East Midlands, the north-east and the south-east. Prosecutors in Istanbul are demanding up to 10 years in jail for a taxi driver who cheated a tourist by unnecessarily extending a journey. Prosecutors accuse the taxi driver of committing "aggravated fraud." Tourist stopped the taxi in the Kadik"oy district on Istanbul's Asian side to go to the G"okcen Airport, also on the Asian side. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has offered recognition of Taliban insurgents as a legitimate political group as part of a proposed political process that could lead to talks aimed at ending more than 16 years of war. "We are making this offer without any preconditions in order to lead to a peace agreement," Ghani said in opening remarks to an international conference attended by officials from around 25 countries involved in the so-called Kabul Process. Mascot-loving Japan has unveiled two new characters as the mascots for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games. A blue-checked character will be the one for the Olympics and a pink cherry blossom-inspired one for the Paralympics. This intrepid swimmer plunged into icy waters in Lake Windemere, north-west England, this morning. Lauren, 23, is from Kendal in Cumbria. She's a triathlete who trains year-round and uses Lake Windermere to swim in whatever the weather. But with water temperatures of around 3 degrees C and air temperature of minus 2, she did at least keep a woolly hat on while in the water. A large cold front, popularly called the Beast From The East, has brought snow, ice and cold winds across much of the UK.

Dubliner Michelle Lehane was considering her commuting options on Wednesday, February 28, as heavy snow hit the Irish capital.A quick look out the window confirmed that walking would be the best mode of transport, as she saw a bus crawling along the road, easily outstripped by a pedestrian nearby.“Dublin Bus aren't taking any chances in this weather!” Lehane wrote on Instagram.“Due to severe weather overnight, there will be significant disruption to services this morning,” said Dublin Bus.
