Sad! What Femi Falana, Akinfeleye said about Nigeria’s democracy will make you cry
– Two Nigerian eminent figures, Femi Falana (SAN) and Professor Ralph Akinfeleye have both described Nigeria’s democracy as that which is rickety and adulterated
– Both made this known on Sunday, June 12 which marked another anniversary of the annulled Saturday, June 1993 presidential election
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) and Prof Ralph Akinfeleye of the department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos were among the prominent dignitaries on Sunday, June 12, who requested for the reorganisation of Nigeria’s democracy in order to move the nation forward.

Both Falana and Akinfeleye were part of the speakers at a public lecture organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos state chapter, in order to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the annulment of the Saturday, June 12 presidential election.

While speaking at the event as the guest speaker, Falana described the current political dispensation as “rickety,” while also criticising Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state, for appointing sole administrators to oversee the affairs of the 57 local council development areas in the state.
Falana said: “We have been having series of restructuring in Nigeria since 1999 and all we have been having are rickety democracy.
“Restructuring of Nigeria should be decided by Nigerians and not by charlatans. And there can not be restructuring without democratization and the Federal Government from Abuja should shelve power to the states for even development to take place.”

Prof Akinfeleye who toed Falana’s path said Nigeria’s democracy is totally polluted. He thereafter urged the judiciary and Nigeria media to summon up the courage by saving Nigeria from the brink of total collapse.
One of the proofs that democracy in Nigeria is facing serious challenge is the unending CCT trial of Senate president, Bukola Saraki, which is the latest episode in the events of things in the country, as it has virtually overshadowed every other national issues.
