Ebokae Ofuonya, nephew of the late Stephen Keshi, on Monday June 13, explained why the remains of the former Super Eagles coach must be buried at Illah, his village, and not beside his wife in Benin as speculated in some quarters.

NAIJ.com reports that the late most successful indigenous coach and native of Illah, Oshimili North local government area of Delta state, lived most of his life in Benin, Edo state, and got married a Benin woman, Kate Aburime.
Kate his late wife who died in December, 2015, was buried at Keshi’s would have been permanent resident located at Ugbor area of GRA in Benin. The building was however not yet completed by the time of his death.
Speaking exclusively to NAIJ.com at the Benin resident of the late footballer, Ebokae disclosed that being a titled man, tradition demands that Keshi must be taken home to be buried among his ancestors.
“Stephen Keshi is a titled man. The title of Owanetiora of Illah was conferred on him by the traditional ruler of Illah after he led the senior national team to conquer the continent in 2013.
“For that reason, he can never be buried anywhere else, but among his people. That is what our tradition demands. And this should laid to rest insinuation that he would be laid to rest beside his wife in his Benin,” he said.
The grief-strike Ebokae however disclosed that he was yet to go to Illah to officially notify the traditional ruler and the entire community of Keshi’s death as their custom demands.

He however refused to comment on rumours that the late football hero instructed his family members to exhume the remains of his late wife and reburied beside him, when he eventually dies.
