Collision between Peña and Williamson’s leads to 3 runs for A’s
The bottom four spots in the Giants’ lineup Wednesday night didn’t get a lot of oohs and aahs from the bipartisan crowd at the Coliseum.
The only people Trevor Brown, Mac Williamson, Ramiro Peña and Ruben Tejada scared were each other, as Williamson bulldozed Peña in a third-inning collision that led to the Athletics’ first three runs.
Marcus Semien wound up standing on third base after Williamson, the right fielder, and Peña, the second baseman, didn’t communicate on a pop-up to short right field.
“Peña and Williamson couldn’t hear each other calling for it,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Peña will be out five to seven days with an ankle injury, and Bochy said the Giants will need to make a roster move.
Williamson drifted back, got to the wall, leaped and had the ball in his glove but wasn’t able to squeeze it and bring it back to safety.
Williamson tried to hit the first pitch back to McCovey Cove but missed.
A strikeout would have been better than the eventual double play that he grounded into.
