The Hague Upholds Convictions Of Bosnian Serb Police Officials

A UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague rejected appeals from two former Bosnian Serb police officials responsible for war crimes during the war in Bosnia in 1992. The appeals chamber at the UN special court upheld the 22 year prison sentences handed to former Bosnian Serb police officials Mico Stanisic and Stojan Zupljanin for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed between April and December 1992 in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnian Muslims and Bosnian Croats were expelled or deliberately exterminated in a campaign of violence and terror to make room for a pure Serbian entity during the break-up of former Yugoslavia.  Balkan Insight reports: The Hague Tribunal on Thursday rejected appeals from Stanisic and Zupljanin and upheld their convictions for crimes committed during the war in Bosnia in 1992. Stanisic was the wartime interior minister of Bosnia’s Serb-dominated entity Republika Srpska and Zupljanin was the chief of the regional police HQ in the entity’s main city, Banja Luka. Both were found guilty of the persecution, murder and torture of Bosniaks and Croats from April to December 1992, while Zupljanin was also convicted of extermination.
