YouTube launches TV service at $35 a month
YouTube TV will offer content from 40 networks, including ESPN, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.
YouTube TV creates partnerships with TV networks, an industry that had been reluctant in the past to work with tech companies over the price of the content.
“Having an early mover advantage does matter,” said Paul Verna, a senior analyst with research firm eMarketer on YouTube TV.
YouTube made a foray into paid subscriptions last year when it launched YouTube Red, which offered exclusive content from some of YouTube’s biggest stars for $10 a month and access to Google Play, Google’s streaming music service.
[...] analysts said YouTube Red’s growth has been moderate, compared to the large audience that users YouTube to watch videos — estimated at more than 1 billion people each month.
While YouTube has pushed for longer-form content that can generate more advertising revenue, many users still tune into shorter video clips.
