Assorted weapons recovered from ex-bandits in Sokoto

The Nigeria Police Force says it has recovered 40 weapons from 27 repentant bandits, who were recently granted amnesty in Isa Local Government area of Sokoto state.

This was revealed by Sokoto State Commissioner of Police Mohammed Abdulkadir on Wednesday, March 1 while speaking with journalists in the state capital, Sokoto.

ThisDay reports that Abdulkadir listed weapons given up by the bandits to include pump-action rifles, AK-47 rifles and pistols, among others.

The Sokoto police boss commended the state government’s move to assist the repentant bandits with seed money to start businesses, houses and farmlands.

He this development will facilitate their reintegration into the society, earn legal livelihoods and contribute to national development.

Abdulkadir also confirmed the killing of a woman and her 17-month-old child by armed robbers at Gundumi forest, along the Sokoto/Isa road, on February 26.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Senate has raised the alarm over the proliferation of weapons in the country.

The Senate moved to investigate the 661 pump-action rifles discovered and seized by the Nigeria Customs Service some weeks ago in Lagos state.

The upper house of legislature resolved to carry out the investigations following a motion moved by Senator Hope Uzodinma expressing worries over the proliferation of small arms in Nigeria.
