The majority of judges in Brazil's Superior Electoral Court voted on Friday (Jun. 30) to bar former President Jair Bolsonaro from running for public office for eight years. Bolsonaro will not be allowed to compete in elections until 2030. Appeals may be filed against the decision.
In the quarter ending in May, the unemployment rate in Brazil dropped to 8.3 percent, marking a decrease of 0.3 percentage points compared to the previous quarter (December 2022 to February 2023). This rate is the lowest for a May-ending quarter since 2015, when it also stood at 8.3 percent. Furthermore, compared to the same period in 2022, the unemployment rate experienced a decline of 1.5 percentage points.
During the opening of the 26th Meeting of the Sao Paulo Forum in Brasilia on Thursday (Jun. 29), President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his intention to bring a unified position of the South American Amazon countries to this year's United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28).
