Boy, 16, wounded overnight in West Woodlawn

A 16-year-old boy was wounded Wednesday when gunfire veered through a window inside a residence in the West Woodlawn neighborhood, Chicago police said. Around midnight, the boy was sitting near a window at a residence in the 6200 block of South Vernon Avenue when someone opened fire in the area, police said. The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the lower back, and was taken to UChicago Medicine where he was listed in good condition, police said. No one was in custody, and detectives were investigating.

Protesters clash at UCLA after police clear pro-Palestinian demonstrators from Columbia University

Dueling groups of protesters clashed Wednesday at the University of California, Los Angeles, grappling in fistfights and shoving, kicking and using sticks to beat one another. Hours earlier, police carrying riot shields burst into a building at Columbia University that pro-Palestinian protesters took over and broke up a demonstration that had paralyzed the school while inspiring others.

Illinois pot businesses could gain tax benefits, easier loan access under DEA reclassification

Cannabis company owners in Illinois welcomed the news Tuesday that the federal government is expected to reclassify marijuana as a drug with medicinal value and lower potential for abuse. The Associated Press reported that the Drug Enforcement Administration will move to reclassify marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III. Rather than continuing to classify cannabis with much stronger drugs like heroin and LSD, the move would put pot in the same class with certain prescription drugs like codeine, ketamine, steroids, and testosterone.
