Cradle Arc subsidiary secures loan facility for Mowana processing plant

Cradle Arc’s 60%-owned subsidiary, Leboam, the holding company of the Mowana copper mine, in Botswana, has conditionally obtained a loan facility of $2-million from Cradle Arc's largest shareholder PenMin Botswana. Proceeds from the facility will be applied to dealing with the intermittent equipment breakdowns and interruptions being continually experienced at Mowana's processing plant that have adversely affected the company’s production performance.

Alrosa finds 28.59ct yellow diamond

Russian diamond miner Alrosa subsidiary AlmazyAnabara has extracted a large 28.59-ct rough diamond of deep greenish-yellow hue – its largest yellow rough diamond for the year. The diamond was discovered at Ebelyakh placer deposit in July.

BlueRock seeks to improve Kareevlei profitability with proposed upgrades

Highlands on Monday confirmed that its project partner Metallurgical Corporation of China (MCC) could spend up to $1.5-billion on expanding the project, with details of the proposed expansion still under wraps.

Salt Lake gets approval for Williamson pond

The Western Australian Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety has given ASX-listed Salt Lake Potash the go-ahead to construct a pond system to dewater the Williamson pit, at its Lake Way project. The Williamson pond will be the first operational scale sulphate of potash (SOP) evaporation ponds built on a salt lake in Australia, and was an important part of the staged de-risking and development of the Lake Way project, as well as across the Goldfields Salt Lakes project, Salt Lake Potash said on Monday.

Australia’s Newcastle port is ordered to cut coal carrying costs for Glencore

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has ordered the Port of Newcastle Operations (PNO) to reduce its charges for ships carrying coal for mining major Glencore by 20%. In January 2015, PNO increased the charge for coal ships entering the port by about 40% to A$0.69/t.

MCA calls for legislation review to end ‘uranium discrimination’

The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has called for a reform of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act, to allow Australia to benefit from uranium mining. In a paper commissioned by the MCA, environmental assessment expert Lachlan Wilkinson recommended the Act be reformed to streamline environmental approval of uranium projects while retaining environmental protection.

Hydro restarts Brazil alumina refinery at half capacity

Norwegian aluminium company Norsk Hydro will restart its Alunorte alumina refinery, in Brazil, at 50% capacity, following approval by federal environmental agency IBAMA to use its press filter technology for processing bauxite residues. The “exceptional” authorisation, which was granted on Friday, will extend the life of the residue deposit area 1 (DRS1), which is close to reaching its capacity, and will allow Alunorte to continue operations.

Ecanto says COO of three months steps down
