It's possible that there's a bit of dirt/dust behind the control knob too. Similar things happen with the volume and tone pots on the guitar from time to time. Turn 'em round a few times and if the crackle goes away, it's probably dust. If it doesn't, it isn't.

I'm going mad trying to find an issue with buzzing from certain guitars when I plug them into a Fender Blues Junior. Most of them are fine, but there's a '59 ES-225 with a couple of P90's, a TV Jones equipped Gretsch Country Club and a Thinline USA Tele that buzz really badly - but not all the time. I don't know if the household appliances are at a conflicting frequency, whether my electrics at hone are a bit jaded, or whether it's the amp. It's only on three guitars, and even then they have different levels of buzz at different times - the rest are fine. Aaargh.
