Not sure if this applies to all gamblers, but I recently realised that my pal doesn't gamble to win money. I think his brain is addicted to the risk involved in actually losing money.
My evidence for this being him having an addictive personsality. I actually think he got addicted to saving, and put £20k away. He then started gambling again, say £100 bet to win £500.... Now he can't spend the £20k on anything, so what difference is having £20.5k going to make to him ?

Tough one to break this one. I gamble semi regularly but usually small amounts with the occasional large. Everything I stake I can afford to lose and that's the secret. The buzz people get from a potential win is a huge motivator and I've seen gamblers stake everything on a huge bet, win it then promptly gamble the winnings.
