I don't know many people who were really surprised. I don't know if you saw the match but the first half performance was "meh" and the second half was worse than anything we saw under even Clarke and Zola. Straight after the match Redknapp was asked what he had said at half-time, he replied "nothing much, just carry on the same". I'd go as far as to say it was in the top 10 of the most insipid piss-poor performances (in the second half) that i've seen in 50 years of going

I never saw that as saying they still believed in Redknapp ... quite the opposite in fact. To me, it was a final warning ... "Harry, it was easy to believe in you when you were winning, but that's not the important thing to us, we have to believe in you when you are failing too... do something to convince us that we should still believe in you"

I think it reasonably sensational, or at least surprising, in the context of it being only just over two weeks before Harry was allowed to bring so many players in and, particularly with injuries, hadn't had chance to see the team gel. Those who were watching, though, including myself, were left scratching our heads as to whether he was actually on the right lnes after that disastrous and defeatist second half.
Your second point - yes, that's a different way of reading it, and it's not one that I'd considered, but in the light of events, the wording was actually very precise in those terms. It was easy to read it as a vote of confidence but it looks like it was more cryptic than that, as you noted.
