Can any of the well-travelled cognoscenti please tell me if I need an ESTA if I'm just passing through the USA on a connecting flight - to Mexico in this case?

I think you will need an ESTA, Flow into JFK last year had to change flights to get down to Fort Lauderdale (I know I was staying in the US) and you had to clear customs before getting to another Terminal.
There airports are massive took us just over 2 hours from stepping of the plane to getting over to the next terminal and that was with no baggie collect.
