From the cute to the horrific: Switzerland’s weirdest museums

SwissInfo

Switzerland has some of the biggest and best museums in the world, but it is also home to some really bizarre and niche ones. Which museum, for example, has “enough material for a thousand nightmares”? (Clue: it’s got nothing to do with HR Giger.) Switzerland has the highest density of museums in the world, with more than 1,000 devoted to a wide range of topics. To mark International Museum Day on Saturday, here’s a look at some that are off the beaten tourist track. Frog Museum Nothing to see here. Читать дальше...

Nearly half of Swiss bee species on endangered ‘red list’

SwissInfo

Some 45% of native wild bee species are endangered, due to an insufficient number of flowers for collecting pollen and nectar and a lack of nesting sites. On the other hand, several species considered extinct 30 years ago have reappeared in the country: as a result of climate change, some warmth-loving wild bees are making Switzerland their home for the first time or again after a long time, the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) said on Friday. The situation of bees in Switzerland is similar to in countries like Germany... Читать дальше...

Gay conversion therapy banned in Swiss canton of Valais

SwissInfo

On Thursday, the cantonal parliament approved a new Health Act which includes a ban on therapies aimed at changing sexual orientation or gender identity. After examining around forty amendments, the council’s members finally approved the bill by 106 votes to 21. All political groups, with the exception of the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, were satisfied with the outcome. Conversion therapies are considered “discriminatory, cruel, inhumane and degrading by the United Nations”, said Mathias Reynard... Читать дальше...

Concerns raised over Swiss underground freight plans

SwissInfo

Swiss plans for the large-scale underground transport of goods are “fundamentally innovative”, but problems remain, said participants at a public event. Locations for loading points for the privately-funded “Cargo sous terrain” (CST) project have notably raised concerns, and planners want to make improvements. The first CST section is to run from Zurich Airport through Zurich, Urdorf (canton Zurich), Spreitenbach (Aargau) and Suhr (Aargau) before arriving in Härkingen (Solothurn); eleven access points or hubs are planned. Swiss student group condemns campus occupations

SwissInfo

The Association of Swiss Student Organisations has said that sit-in protests in connection with the Middle East conflict have, through some discriminatory demands and calls for violence, “lost all legitimacy”. The line between anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and discrimination should never be crossed, according to a statement issued by the association on Thursday. Calls for a blanket boycott of scientific collaboration with Israeli universities, such as those made by some of the protestors, must be rejected, the association said. Читать дальше...

Swiss LGTBIQ helpline: attacks more than doubled in 2023

SwissInfo

On Friday, three organisations who jointly operate a Swiss helpline drew attention to the big increase in reports and called for appropriate action. In 2023, 305 cases of verbal abuse or attacks against lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex or queer (LGBTIQ) people were reported to the Swiss LGBTIQ Helpline – more than twice as many as in 2022. The rapid increase shows that the more LGBTIQ-hostile climate in the media and politics has real consequences for the safety of such people in Switzerland... Читать дальше...

FIFA rule change opens door to departure from Switzerland

SwissInfo

On Friday, football’s international governing body laid the formal foundations for a theoretical departure from its headquarters in Zurich. However, FIFA is “happy” in Switzerland, the association said before the congress vote. According to an amendment to its statutes approved by Congress members in Bangkok on Friday, FIFA’s central office will continue to be located in the Swiss city of Zurich – until the Congress makes a decision to change this. There was no such clause until now. “Until our members decide otherwise... Читать дальше...

Infertility: how Switzerland is failing many couples who want a child

SwissInfo

Infertility is a public health issue around the world. It affects about one couple in seven in Switzerland, where access to assisted reproductive technology (ART) is restricted by the high cost and legislation, which is among the strictest in Europe. Meanwhile, other countries are including ART in their family policies. “Learning that you’re infertile is a real blow,” says Julie Rosset. “When you’ve been trying for a baby for two years, hardly thinking of anything else, and then you see women around you getting pregnant with no trouble at all...
