Switzerland commits CHF50 million to combat rural poverty worldwide

Switzerland is supporting the fight against poverty in rural areas worldwide with a total of CHF49.5 million ($54.1 million) over the next three years. The focus is on strengthening small farmers and sustainable agriculture as well as the fight against hunger. The Federal Council has approved the Swiss contribution to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), as announced on Wednesday. Arrests made in raid against Turkish criminal organisation

A total of 19 suspects were arrested on Wednesday in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Turkey in a cross-border raid against a Turkish criminal organisation. According to the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland, property searches were carried out in cantons Aargau and Zurich in connection with the raid. Swiss engineering industry is facing a downturn

The Swiss mechanical and electrical engineering industries and related technology sectors continue to face an uncomfortable situation. However, there are increasing signs that the bottom of the downturn will be reached this year. In the first quarter of 2024, member companies' sales and orders fell by 5.4% and 2.3% respectively compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Senate commission criticises ECtHR for climate ruling against Switzerland

The European Court of Human Rights has overreached its authority with its climate judgement against Switzerland. This is the view of the Senate Legal Affairs Committee. It is asking the Senate to issue a declaration to this effect. Daniel Jositsch (social democrat from Zurich) chairman of the Senate Legal Affairs Committee (RK-S) told the media in Bern on Tuesday that the committee voted 10 to 3 that the Senate should adopt the declaration. Workers poisoned by a toxic leak in Swiss tunnel

Five workers were exposed late Tuesday night to a liquid chemical leaking from a freight container which was being transported by train through the Lötschberg tunnel. There was no danger to the public or the environment, Valais police said on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter. The five tunnel workers suffered respiratory problems and eye irritation. WEF founder Schwab announces retirement from leadership role

Klaus Schwab will soon be relinquishing his current position as head of the World Economic Forum, the 86-year-old announced in an e-mail to staff on Tuesday. A WEF spokesperson confirmed reports to the Keystone-SDA news agency. By January 2025, Schwab will change role from executive chairman to chairman of the Board of Trustees, the spokesperson said.
