British prisons house more than 1,330 Albanians — the biggest foreign nationality group behind bars.
And ministers are determined to slash the bill for holding them, which has soared to about £60million a year.
A deal speeding up the removal of prisoners will be sealed within weeks after officials from the UK Ministry of Justice and Prison Service visited Albania in March.
The fact-finding trip paved the way for faster prisoner transfers in return for modernising jails and providing a fleet of prison vehicles.
A source from Albania’s prison service said: “The UK team visited all our prisons in Peqin, Lezhe, Fushe Kruje and Drenova in the city of Korca.
“They had a clear order from their minister in the UK to help us without delay.
“They will help us modernise prison management and improve security and logistics.”
The UK has donated 12 vehicles as part of the deal, which will also increase the capacity of Albanian prisons.
