Verizon Fios quietly adds Netflix integration to three set-top box models

The Verge

Verizon Fios has for the first time integrated Netflix into its set-top boxes, according to a Netflix customer support page first spotted this week by industry blog FierceCable. The addition, which is supported by models IPC1100P2, IPC1100P1, and the VMS1100 DVR set-top box, means Fios customers now have native access to the streaming TV service from directly within the cable interface, obviating the need to use a smart TV’s built-in app with a different remote, or to have a streaming TV stick plugged in. The Verge

We've waited years for the iPhone to support wireless charging. We wanted that convenience, we said. We wanted to be just like our Android brethren, we said. And now, I'm happy to share that we can all unite over a wireless Pikachu charger. This smart urinal will show you ads while you pee

The Verge

Mr.Friendly is a Dutch startup that invented a smart urinal, first spotted by The Next Web. It’s a urinal, with a small screen on top that companies can manage remotely to serve ads to customers. The Mr.Friendly urinals aren’t just dumb screens. No, no, they’re equipped with sensors to detect when you’re taking a leak, and only show you the ads then. Because it’s a smart urinal.

Patreon users are worried about the site’s new payment structure

The Verge

Patreon has set up a new payment model that’s supposed to make artists’ lives easier, but could discourage small-time patrons from making pledges. Yesterday, Patreon announced that it would no longer take payment processing fees out of an artist’s monthly funds. Starting December 18th, it will charge those fees to patrons, adding a service fee of 2.9 percent, plus 35 cents on each pledge.

Why players are turning cute games into torture sims

The Verge

Two days into Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Jericho Palado realized that he could transform the game’s colorful, creature-filled world into something its designers never intended: a prison yard. Using the white fence panels and cots that most players use to build charming campsites, the second-year UCLA student funneled the pastel mammals that populate his game into inhumanely small holding cells; he situated a blushing, purple cat near the entrance as a makeshift guard. Palado published photos of the results to social media... Читать дальше...

You can now use Twitter in augmented reality, in case your life isn’t bleak enough

The Verge

I like Twitter. Tweeting helps me formulate thoughts in a unique way, and despite the company’s many missteps, I think it’s a net positive addition to my life. That should make me a good target audience for TweetReality: an augmented reality app, based on Apple’s ARKit, that puts your Twitter feed in the real world. Instead, I’m probably its worst possible test case.

Finding the best leather case for the iPhone X

The Verge

The iPhone X is a great smartphone with one, fairly large flaw: it’s delicate. Not only is its dual-sided glass design delicate, but it’s also fairly slippery. On top of that, the iPhone X is the most expensive iPhone to repair. At Apple, a screen replacement runs $279, while any other fix, including repairing the back of the phone, commands a heart-stopping $549. Purchasing AppleCare can reduce those costs dramatically, but even that isn’t cheap: two years of AppleCare is $199, plus $29 for each screen repair and $99 for other fixes. Читать дальше...

We know just how much staring at the sun can damage your eyes, thanks to woman who stared at eclipse

The Verge

For six seconds on the day of the eclipse, a woman looked at the sun without protecting her eyes. She tried again for 20 seconds, this time using eclipse glasses, but the damage was done. Four hours later, her vision was blurry, she could only see black — and her eyes have now provided the first glimpse of what happens on the cellular level when you look straight at the sun.

Facebook’s Year in Review hasn’t realized that social media isn’t fun anymore

The Verge

Ah, the holidays. The time of year when Facebook flexes its algorithms to compile all of your best social media posts into a Year in Review video. These little montages have been sprouting up like weeds on my timeline lately, showcasing many smiley faces and birthday wishes. However, they’ve also served as a lovely reminder of just how bleak 2017 actually was.

Uber reportedly paid a 20-year-old man to keep silent about security breach

The Verge

A 20-year-old man was responsible for the massive data breach at Uber last year, and the company paid him to destroy the data through its bug bounty program, reports Reuters. In November, Uber revealed it suffered from a cyberattack in October 2016 that exposed the private data of 57 million drivers and customers, which it then covered up. Uber allegedly paid hackers a $100,000 ransom to delete the data and not disclose what had happened to the media and public. The company didn’t say how the hacker was paid, or who he was.
