Labour leadership: Yvette Cooper's asylum speech proves she has what it takes to lead

The Independent

Maybe it’s too late to swing the voting for the Labour leadership. But Yvette Cooper’s speech on Tuesday on asylum is one of the very few in the contest so far, if not the only one, with at least a chance of remaking the political weather, and perhaps even in time of changing public policy. This isn’t just because of the passion with which she delivered her call for the admission of 10,000 refugees from Syria, or because she was saying something that, as she herself understated it, “won’t be popular with everyone”... Why we've decided to call it Europe's refugee crisis

The Independent

Europe is seeing a crisis at the moment, but nobody can agree on what sort of crisis it is. If you believed some of the language used by British politicians – David Cameron’s description of those arriving in Calais as a ‘swarm’, for instance, or Philip Hammond’s characterisation of them as a group of people ‘marauding around’ who will threaten Europe’s ‘standard of living and social structure’ if allowed to settle in the UK – then you might be forgiven for thinking that this is a crisis for Britain... So David Cameron, is this dead Syrian child one of the 'swarm' of migrants you fear so much?

The Independent

He looks asleep, far away in dreamland, as if he dropped off after a long day of play and fun, of tricks and naughtiness. His trainers are still on his feet. Did he pester mum and dad until they bought them? His red T-shirt and trousers have rolled up to reveal his tummy. I want to touch his soft, plump tummy, to hold him, wake him gently and dry him off.

Turkey's despotism goes deeper than the arrest of Vice journalists

The Independent

As if cracking down on Kurds wasn’t bad enough, Turkey is now cracking down on journalists who report on this, too.  Days ago, two British journalists and their Iraqi fixer, working for Vice News, were arrested in Diyarbakir, southeast Turkey, where they were filming clashes between the Kurdish PKK party and police. Charged with “engaging in terrorist activity”, they now face trial – a move condemned by Vice and human rights organisations alike.

Letters: There may be much worse to come in the refugee crisis

The Independent

The migrant crisis is continually being presented as a “problem” to which a “solution” is urgently required, some of which are becoming increasingly bizarre – such as the latest suggestion from Yvette Cooper of distributing 10 migrants per town, as if they were discrete entities that can be parcelled out.

The truth about pornography's race problem

The Independent

Some of the leading figures in the pornography business have spoken out about the need to discuss racism in the adult industry and how it can be overcome.

It’s only natural for politicians like William Hague to end up as journalists

The Independent

When William Hague addressed the Conservative Party Conference at the age of 16, all wide lapels and blue kipper tie, warning of the perils of the “Socialist state”, and pouring scorn on James Callaghan’s vision of a “promised land”, he could surely have not imagined that a career which encompassed both leading his party and a period as Foreign Secretary would climax with his being re-introduced to the nation as a “brilliant new columnist”.

People, Places and Things, Dorfman, National Theatre, review: Generous-spirited with a strong streak of darkly humane humour

The Independent

Back in 2000, David Hare's play My Zinc Bed suggested that, in the moral vacuum left by the collapse of the old certainties, addiction (to drink, drugs, shopping) had replaced ideology. We were now driven by our compulsions rather than our convictions, it was argued, and one of its characters castigated Alcoholics Anonymous as a cult that substituted one form of dependency with another. I liked the piece better than some, while agreeing that it was slightly too systematic and that it didn't pull... Читать дальше...
