Doping crisis: Paula Radcliffe should just come clean and make all her data public

The Independent

It would have been laughable were the Conservative MP Jesse Norman not chairman of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee and so, we have to assume, entrusted with a supposed role in helping persuade the athletics establishment that some transparency on doping would help to lift its battered reputation.

Letters: Save our justice system from falling into ruin

The Independent

The unprecedented mass resignation of magistrates (“The judicial revolt: mass resignations over punitive court fees”, 9 September) is yet another indication of how little this government understands the workings of our justice system.

Let’s face up to the fact that assisted death is really assisted suicide

The Independent

It’s a testament to the resilience of the British stiff upper lip that, when I approached a number of senior journalists to discuss the question of assisted dying this week, their reticence spoke volumes. One was “reluctant” to enter the debate; another found it a subject they were “uncomfortable” to touch. Luckily, given the significance of the vote taking place in Commons tomorrow, I feel no such anxieties, but it’s no wonder that we shy away from the big questions of our existence  when the... Drone strikes in Syria are not just legally justified

The Independent

The announcement from David Cameron that the Government ordered the killing of two Isis terrorists, Reyaad Khan and Ruhul Amin, has sparked a great deal of anger – much of it synthetic – on the political left. To be accurate, the Government will have agreed to the killing on the basis of available intelligence about their activities and the threats they posed, as well as advice from military commanders.

We need to stop telling ourselves that women and children are the only refugees who matter

The Independent

To look at the images of refugees fleeing from the Middle East and North Africa, you could be forgiven for thinking that the average age in these countries is about 10. The body of three-year-old Aylan changed the media narrative of this crisis and many more poignant images have been circulated. We have seen Laith Majid clutching his children as he sheds tears of joy after surviving Aylan’s same journey, as well as children clambering through the windows to board packed trains in Macedonia, and... If we teach that sex is shameful without teaching consent – how will sexually abused children ever come forward?

The Independent

Sex education has long been a controversial topic in the United States. In Texas, where I work, sex education does not really exist, at least not in schools. About 47% of school districts provide nothing in terms of sex education and state-approved textbooks lack information on contraception. If a school chooses to teach sexual health education, they must emphasize abstinence and inform youth about the “emotional trauma” associated with sexual activity before marriage.

Brave New World, Royal & Derngate Northampton, review: Harrowing story of an anti-tragic utopia is heartily recommended

The Independent

Adaptations of Orwell's 1984 come along fairly regularly (as witness Headlong's recent acclaimed account of it). Far rarer are stage versions of Brave New World, Aldous Huxley's 1932 vision of a global totalitarian state where dissent has been eliminated not through fear but by enslaving the population to an empty, passionless form of happiness.

Signing a petition for Netanyahu's arrest is the worst way to hold Israel to account

The Independent

Benjamin Netanyahu is not an especially agreeable man. As Israeli Prime Ministers go, he has done little of real benefit for either his country or the Palestinians. Indeed, his undoubted talents for encouraging settlement-building and cultivating diplomatic animosity have proved a destabilizing force, both for international politics and the state of Israel itself.

EU states are losing sight of our shared values as the world watches us deal with the refugee crisis

The Independent

David Cameron, stung into action by public opinion this week, has made an announcement which at first glance seems like a generous change in UK policy. The amount of aid, for instance, is high - second only to the US. But in the coming days it will come to be seen as deeply cynical - and it will also lead to damage to some key critical decisions which EU Member States had to take together with the UK.

Exception to the rule: Don't judge the monarchy by Elizabeth's exemplary reign

The Independent

Elizabeth II, who surpasses Queen Victoria as our longest reigning monarch today, is the best advertisement possible for a thoroughly bad idea: the hereditary principle. During her reign she has steered the monarchy through difficult times. The most dangerous of these came with the public reaction to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997 – or rather the public’s revulsion at the way they perceived the Palace as being in some way uncaring in the aftermath of that tragedy. For the Queen... Читать дальше...

An execution of duty? The PM must be sure his intelligence information is better than Tony Blair's when he approves an order to kill in Syria

The Independent

The killing of Reyaad Khan, a British citizen turned jihadist fighter, was never likely to provoke outrage or shock in this country. This was a youth who boasted on Twitter about being implicated in what he called “executions”, including one that he gleefully described as “the longest decapitation ever”.  Anyone who so publicly delights in seeing suffering inflicted on others is not a candidate for public sympathy.
