I don't blame doctors for walking out of pay negotiations with the Government
If I was a young doctor working in the NHS today, I would be fuming.

As he’s been leader for five days now, the press are calming down a bit. By tomorrow headlines will only say things like, “Cor-Bin Laden will force pets to be Muslim”, followed by an interview with 89-year-old Vera, who says: “It’s not fair because my hamster’s scared of burqas. That’s the last time I’ll vote Labour.”
A peculiarity of the stand-off between the West and Russia over Ukraine has been the extent to which so much else has remained the same. The status quo trundled on. Opportunities for sabotage were passed up by both sides, but most conspicuously by Russia.
I like Elton John. His songs invoke powerful emotions, and his status as a talented artist and songwriter is not disputed.
Exactly a year ago today, Alex Salmond’s aides were putting the finishing touches to the text of what they hoped would be an historic victory speech. “In the early hours of this morning, Scotland voted Yes,” the then First Minister was to begin. “We are a nation reborn.” It was not to be; instead, the veteran Nationalist leader conceded defeat.
A long time ago, when I was at college, our lecturer came in after the weekend and railed about the latest outbreak of football hooliganism. “They are just low-life yobs who get drunk and beat each other up,” he said. He was a rugby man, who played for the local team. Minutes later, with no trace of irony, he was telling us about his own weekend. “Terrific match,” he said, “we smashed their heads in and then had a tremendous piss-up.”
How successful are the grassroots campaigns to support refugees in the Calais ‘Jungle’? Short answer: too successful. In fact, the Jungle is overwhelmed with donations, and limited storage facilities are forcing everyone to make tough decisions. As food, clothes and shelter pour in across the UK to regional collection centres, the logistics question has raised its head. How to increase the reach of aid and distribute to the ever growing number of camps across Europe and the Middle East? We need corporations on board. Читать дальше...
There is a general assumption that when you go to university, the curriculum centres around sex and alcohol. In 2014 it was reported that on Tinder, the dating app renowned for casual hook-ups, half of its users were aged 18-24, and were based at university.
While Europe grapples with a surge of desperate refugees fleeing conflict, persecution and poverty, the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca dawns upon us again.
The Rugby World Cup starts on Friday, with the hosts England facing off against Fiji at Twickenham. As you'd expect, the home side's fans will be out in full force, and singing their hearts out in support of Stuart Lancaster's men. Whatever happens on the pitch however, one thing is inevitable. Swing Low Sweet Chariot will be sung. It has been the anthem of English rugby for at least 25 years now. However, its history should give England's rugby fans pause for thought before they belt it out from the stands. Читать дальше...
It’s not always easy for people to understand what it means when I say that I am a non-binary person. It tends to lead to confused looks, followed by me sitting down for a 30-minute Q and A session with whichever friend I’ve just come out to. To put it simply, being non-binary means that I identify as neither a man nor a woman. And yes, that still makes me transgender.

The crippling housing crisis in London affecting graduates and young professionals has come to light once again in a new report by the Sutton Trust, as the think-tank urges all 2016 mayoral election candidates to consider ways to address the issue.
Even I, political obsessive since the age of 21, am bored with reading about Labour’s new leader (which is how he should be described, rather than the new Labour leader), so here, via Moose Allain, is an addition to my Top 10 Street Names.
A cheating husband from South Korea who separated from his wife 15 years ago has been refused a divorce by the country’s Supreme Court.
Energy bills are not typically met with a cheer. Prices have gone up, often steeply, in the past decade, with the profit margins of the Big Six also inflating year-by-year. For their part, consumers have had little choice but to pay through the nose to keep the heating on, knowing as they do that much of the energy is sourced from fossil fuels, damaging to the planet as well as their bank account.
In medicine, trust is paramount. We rightly hold doctors to the highest standards of integrity and expect them to be honest and open with us about our treatment, its side-effects and its likely outcome. If we expect such standards of the people who prescribe the drugs – why not the people who make them?
So at 2pm Eastern Daylight Time the Fed will announce its decision on interest rates. Were it to make that decision purely on domestic grounds there would be a clear case for an increase, not overwhelming (because headline inflation is still depressed by the falls in energy and commodity prices), but pretty clear. If it does not move it will be because of international conditions: a global slowdown associated with the decline in growth in China. But how real, and how worrying, is this slowdown?
Figures show that state school graduates tend to have higher degree outcomes than independent school graduates.
