I'm eternally greatful for those who were still there in the darkest times for the club.
The very best of the best Blues fans.
The point being made not just by me is that as a result of that unmatched loyalty, stoicism and indefatigability of the 6,000 sadly comes with less of a drive to demand better.
If you still wanted a season ticket in the early 90s, you probably wouldnt be as outraged by our current plight.
That should make sense.
Not all of you of course. Many of those are amongst those planning protests, from what I've seen on Twitter.
Being honest I think the dark days of the 80s were a lot worse than now, gates fell dramatically following the Leeds riot, hooliganism was at its height all over the UK and we had a very very poor team, multiple loans were not allowed back then, there really was no hope and a stadium that was literally falling down, away days were much more fun than home games, myself and my mates from Kingstanding growing up did go to every game, it was more about the days out than the actual game for us, if we got a win great but normally it would be the usual disappointment, going back to our local the college arms was part of our day, knowing it was full of Villa fans who looked on at us like we were mad, but we put them to shame as most of them didn't even bother to go to villa gamws despite coming off the back of one of their most successful periods the early 80s, they used to admire our loyalty but were quick to continually mock our shambles of a club, it will get better but God knows when, yes it's a different era now and people are fed up of what's going on now, but trust me the mid 80s were really the darkest days in our history.
Having first gone to a Blues game in 1985, aged 7, the dark days of the 80s seemed normal to me and so I grew up with low expectations when it comes to Blues. You make the point though that football was in a mess across the board then. Surely that made Blues' plight back then easier to stomach than our current predicament does? Look around now and you know what's possible with the right owners. A lot of our supposed equals and historically smaller clubs are (on the surface at least) thriving, have far better support and have stadiums that are fully functional, with proper facilities.
It's a tired old cliché to say we're a sleeping giant and we should be better as we carry the name of the second most populated city in the UK, but there's some credence in that surely. There are way too many fans who sleep walk their way to St Andrews on a match day and spend the game quietly grunting and tutting but accepting the shite because it's Blues and we've mostly always been shite. You can almost see them sneering as the small section of fans approach the owners in the kop. "Won't do any good", they mutter. Some of the younger fans might be naughty littles scrotes but at least they want better. They might be even be nicer when, and if, we are better. It's definitely the 6000 (or whoever these zombies are) that are holding us back.
