Google released a guide to teens — who suspiciously love Google

The Verge

Google’s Marketing and Digital Research arm recently released a study on Generation Z (anyone born after 1993) titled It’s Lit: A Definitive Guide to What Teens Think Is Cool. The title alone should immediately remind you of that Steve Buscemi GIF, but the entire document contains little nuggets of painfully sincere guidance for those who, when confronted with a teen, tilt their head to one side, scratch some dandruff from their scalp, and let out a loud, adult-ish “Huh?”

Google WiFi will help you get your kids off the internet

The Verge

Google is making it easier to pry phones and tablets out of your kids’ hands. With Google Wifi, you can now schedule an internet pause time during which the Wi-Fi is blocked from certain devices. The company suggests using it during dinner, your kids’ homework time, or bedtime. You can set multiple timers, tailor how often those pauses repeat (like only on school nights), and then choose the affected devices. You can even pause your gadgets for some extra device sanity when trying to go to sleep. Читать дальше...

The Verge

Multiple technicians with Best Buy’s Geek Squad repair service received hundreds of dollars from the FBI in exchange for seeking child pornography on customers’ computers, according to court documents reviewed by The Washington Post. These filings raise questions about how close a relationship the agency has with Geek Squad members, and whether these relationships could make some of the technicians’ searches unconstitutional.

Congress is trying to give even more power to Hollywood

The Verge

On March 23rd, Reps. Bob Goodlatte and John Conyers introduced a controversial bipartisan bill with over 100 years of history behind it, though you wouldn’t know it from its boring name and seemingly boring topic. It’s called the Register of Copyrights Selection and Accountability Act of 2017 — the key part is that it makes the Register of Copyright a political position appointed by the President and approved by the Senate. That’s in contrast to the current state of affairs, which has been in... Читать дальше...

Android's popularity eclipses Windows among internet users

The Verge

The stat trackers at StatCounter have come out with their internet usage numbers for the month of March, and they have for the first time reported Android as the world's most popular operating system. Nudging ahead of the once-untouchable Windows by a tiny fraction, Android is now the world's most-used platform for getting online according to these latest figures. This represents a natural progression from the difference in devices shipped every year – more than a billion for Android versus 200-something million PCs per year for Windows ... Читать дальше...

This week in tech history: iPads go on sale, Instagram comes to Android, and the Nokia N95

The Verge

Today marks the seventh anniversary of the launch of the iPad. It was on this very day in 2010 when thousands of people lined up to buy a tablet that promised a new kind of personal computing, a vision Bill Gates first demonstrated ten years prior. The iPad reviews were mixed, with few in the tech press willing to predict another home run like the iPod and iPhone before it. Most saw potential, even if they couldn't see the device’s immediate appeal beyond a media consumption device.

Last year’s flagship phone, the P9, was also reasonably well-received.

The Verge

As consumer drones become increasingly settled in the mainstream, it seems inevitable that they’d also annoy more and more people. In the UK, the number of reports to the police concerning drone activity increased threefold between 2015 and 2016, and twelvefold compared to 2014. According to data obtained by the Press Association through freedom of information requests, complaints about drones ranged from allegations of neighbors using the craft to peep over fences, to burglars conducting reconnaissance on houses.
