Facebook’s leaked hate speech quiz looks bad, but the alternative could be worse

The Verge

Earlier today, ProPublica published Facebook slides bluntly detailing the company’s hate speech policy in the form of a quiz. Facebook bans attacks on specific protected classes, which include people of a given race, gender, or sexual orientation. But it’s more lenient on statements about subsets of these categories, and about “quasi-protected” categories like refugees.

Scientists at NASA and Stanford have developed a prototype robot that can grip objects in space, the same way a gecko sticks to walls. Such a robot could be a critical tool for grabbing and relocating space trash, helping to clean up Earth orbit and make it much safer for space travel.

Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 450 chip will power the next wave of budget Android phones

The Verge

Qualcomm has formally announced the successor to its current low-end processor, the Snapdragon 435, in the form of the upcoming Snapdragon 450. While the top-of-the-line Snapdragon 835 may get all the attention, the budget Android phone — like the LG X Venture or ZTE Blade V8 — runs off Qualcomm’s cheaper chips. That makes this a significant upgrade, especially with companies like Google pushing cheaper Android phones for a wider range of customers.

The Verge

LG’s wallpaper-thin W series of 4K OLED TVs wowed us at CES with their almost impossibly slim design. And while the “cheaper” — to say that this is a relative term is a bit of an understatement — $7,999 65-inch model has been available for a while, if you’ve been holding out for the flagship 77-inch model, then I’ve got good news: it can finally be yours for the low, low price of $19,999.

iOS 11 on an iPad still won’t replace your laptop

The Verge

Apple introduced some major changes to the iPad with its iOS 11 beta earlier this week. While you can use the iPad just as you’ve always been able to, there are some additional multitasking changes that really make the iPad Pro more of a laptop contender. Apple has created a dock that acts more like something you’d find on macOS, and refined its side-by-side apps interface so it’s even more similar to Windows 8. These changes make the iPad a lot more useful, but also a lot more confusing than its ever been before. Читать дальше...

The first trailer for 20th Century Fox’s P.T. Barnum biopic and original musical The Greatest Showman is here. Hugh Jackman plays Barnum, a charming, down-on-his-luck guy in a top hat, hanging out in Connecticut in the early 1800s. From what we can see, he’s going to be smooching Michelle Williams, teaming up with Zac Efron, and eventually inventing the circus as we know it. “Every one of us is special, and nobody is like anyone else. That’s the point of my show,” he tells a child. Sure! I’m buying it. Читать дальше...

Deliveries are made using a mini self-driving truck developed by UK tech firm Oxbotica. Ocado is hoping to sell its setup to other retailers — including in the US.

The iPhone changed the way we communicate with our parents

The Verge

The first iPhone I bought was not for me, but for my mother whom I was living away from while in college — four and half hours from home. It was the first time we’d lived apart since immigrating to the United States together, which naturally meant there was a lot of calling to make sure I was doing okay in the cold, snowy hills of upstate New York.

What the EU antitrust ruling could mean for Google search

The Verge

The EU’s antitrust watchdog this week fined Google €2.4 billion ($2.7 billion) for manipulating search results to favor its own shopping services over those offered by competitors. The fine is the largest antitrust penalty issued by the European Commission (EC), which gave Google 90 days to give “equal treatment” to competing services in its search results. How the company does that could have far-reaching implications for its operations across Europe, experts say, though it may be years before the issue is fully resolved. Читать дальше...
