LG might be working on a mini G6

The Verge

LG released its newest flagship, the G6, in April this year. Now, it seems the company might be considering, or at least considered at one point, releasing a mini version of that device. TechnoBuffalo reports that its team viewed an internal document that depicts a 5.4-inch device with an 18:9 aspect ratio. That’s the same unique ratio LG introduced with the G6.

Mike Pence will now oversee US space policy

The Verge

Today, President Trump signed an executive order to reinstate the National Space Council, an executive agency that will be tasked with guiding US space policy during the administration. The council, typically chaired by the vice president, is one that the US has seen before; it was first in operation during the ‘60s and ‘70s and then again under the George H.W. Bush administration, before being dissolved in 1993. Now, it’s back again, and this time with Vice President Mike Pence at the helm.

The Verge

Casino destination Macau is requiring facial recognition and identification card checks for withdrawals made by Chinese UnionPay cardholders at all ATMs, as reported by Bloomberg. Customers who make a withdrawal from the updated cash machines will be asked to stare into a camera for six seconds so the facial-recognition software can verify them against their identity card.

Six teenage girls from Afghanistan planned to come to the US to compete in the First Global Challenge robotics competition this month, but those plans were canceled after they were denied visas to enter the country. Syfy’s space opera Killjoys returns tonight — here’s why you should watch

The Verge

A couple of years ago, Syfy went back to its roots when it greenlit three new television shows: The Expanse, Dark Matter, and Killjoys. All three shows follow the crew of a spaceship in some sector of space, and they all harken back to the days when episodes of Andromeda, Battlestar Galactica, Farscape, or Stargate were easily accessible in broadcast or syndication.

Sprint is getting sued for sabotaging RadioShack’s comeback

The Verge

RadioShack is going down swinging. With nearly all of its stores now out of business, the retailer’s creditors have sued Sprint and are accusing the wireless carrier of backstabbing RadioShack and destroying any hope of a great American comeback story. The creditors are seeking $500 million in damages, according to Reuters, and are alleging that Sprint used a co-branding partnership formed between the two companies in 2015 to its own selfish benefit — and to RadioShack’s eventual doom.

Wonder Woman reigns supreme as the DCEU’s highest-earning US film

The Verge

By any metric, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman has been a success. The film enjoyed the largest-ever opening weekend for a film directed by a woman. It’s now the highest-grossing live-action film directed by a woman in the world. It got an “A” from Cinemascore viewers, and overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. The profound wave of positivity is particularly striking when compared to other DC Comics Extended Universe sibling films, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. In this harrowing exclusive clip from 2:22, precognition and air travel don’t mix well

The Verge

It’s pretty well known that airlines prefer not to show in-flight movies featuring air disasters or near-disasters, so they’re certainly going to want to avoid Paul Currie’s 2:22, a supernatural thriller about an air-traffic controller whose ability to visualize strange patterns in the world pulls him into a mystery based in time, numbers, and eerie coincidence. But first, it distracts him at a crucial moment, leading to a near-disaster that no one’s going to want to watch on a plane. Here’s an... Читать дальше...

This augmented reality concept is like a real-life video game tutorial for your Airbnb rental

The Verge

We’ve seen some cool uses for Apple’s ARKit and other phone-based augmented reality, but this concept design is one of my personal favorites: an AR overlay for settling guests into an Airbnb rental. It’s like a real-life version of the tutorial interface in a video game, except instead of telling you that you can open grates to sneak into locked rooms, it shows you how to use the thermostat or find a first-aid kit. (It’s also a clever replacement for taping notes to the wall, which is probably more accurate... Читать дальше...

Unity is the little game engine that could revolutionize animated movies

The Verge

This week, I attended the Unite Europe conference in Amsterdam, where more than 1,400 current and aspiring game developers gathered to see the latest tools and innovations from Unity, the company responsible for one of the most popular and widely used game engines. But my big takeaway from the event was less about gaming than about moviemaking: the new Cinemachine component that's coming to Unity's 2017.1 release feels a little bit revolutionary. It grants amazing directorial and cinematography powers to even neophyte users like me... Читать дальше...

Microsoft’s canceled Surface Mini tablet emerges in leaked images

The Verge

Microsoft was planning to introduce a Surface Mini tablet alongside its Surface Pro 3 at an event in May 2014. While the Surface Pro 3 was announced to much surprise, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop canceled the Surface Mini project just weeks before. We’ve heard about the Surface Mini many times over the past few years, but Windows Central has now obtained images of the device.

Minority Report holds up because it's about surveillance, not gadgets

The Verge

In 2001, Steven Spielberg began work on his science fiction film Minority Report, famously assembling a “think tank” that tried to figure out what the future might look like. Many sci-fi movies feel dated just a few years after they’ve hit the screen, but 15 years after its original release, Minority Report still looks like the future. Why? Because Spielberg’s group clearly understood that while forward-thinking visual design is important for longevity, nailing how a society may actually evolve... Читать дальше...

Car companies have learned little from smartphones

The Verge

With all this 10th anniversary talk of the iPhone going on sale, I can't help but look back at all the devices disrupted by that rectangular slab of software and silicon, with one notable exception. The list includes wristwatches and bedside alarm clocks; remote controls and light switches; point-and-shoot cameras; printed maps and calendars; and home stereos and MP3 players, including Apple's own iPod. In retrospect, the changes were as swift as they were decisive. But there's one holdout that's still ripe for disruption: cars. Читать дальше...

These LED eyelashes are future fashion

The Verge

Sometimes you see a product and you’re like “wow, that’s so futuristic.” Then you remember you’re living in 2017, 20 years after the date that a sentient AI wiped out most of humanity in the original Terminator movie, and you think: “Huh, maybe we’re living in the future already.” So it is with these amazing LED eyelashes.

German lawmakers have passed a controversial law under which Facebook, Twitter, and other social media companies could face fines of up to €50 million ($57 million) for failing to remove hate speech.
