Nest’s new home camera is an interesting toy

I’ve never understood the fascination with connected home cameras, such as Canary, the Nest Cam, and others. They’ve always been a gimmick in my experience, not reliable enough for a proper security system, not practical enough to be a baby monitor. But a lot of people really like them, so I spent the last week with the new Nest Cam IQ to see if it could change my opinion.

Google News gets a much-needed redesign to cut down on clutter and confusion

Google today unveiled a new look for its 14-year-old news reader that makes the web service much easier to digest. The Google News page now has three sections located at the center of the homepage: a top headlines list, a local list, and a personalized “For You” section containing stories in interest areas you’ve preselected. When the Wannacry ransomware tore through the UK and Europe in May, there was a certain logic to the heightened scale of damage. Australian police blame WannaCry for spoiling 8,000 traffic cam tickets

Australian police have had to suspend upward of 8,000 tickets for speeding and running red lights after learning the cameras that caught the acts had become infected with a virus. The Victoria, Australia police blamed the WannaCry virus, which spread through Windows computers last month, locking down systems and demanding a ransom be paid before they could be used again.

Electric Objects shutters digital art display business and sells app to Giphy

In a Medium post today, Electric Objects founder and CEO Jake Levine announced that his digital art display company is shutting down.
