Jaren Jackson Jr. self-evaluates: Rebounding needs to be more of a staple of things I think about

0

“(Rebounding) needs to be more of a staple of things I think about all the time,” Jaren Jackson Jr. said. “… It’s on my mind, it’s on my brain. You always think about things you can get better at. I have so many different responsibilities on the floor. That’s a big one for our team.”

What’s the buzz on Twitter?

Damichael Cole @DamichaelC
ICYMI: Jaren Jackson Jr. knows he has to be a better rebounder, and he’s not shying away from it. He recently talked about that process.

ICYMI: The Grizzlies have a lot of stars in their roles, but Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. impact both ends of the court across multiple positions. Whatever lineup problems the team faces, “Des & Trip” are always part of a solution.

The first of my preseason Grizzlies roster preview columns starts with the big one, on Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. taking the wheel to start the season.

More on this storyline

And maybe there’s more to the reason why Jackson’s rebounding numbers aren’t prototypical for a 6-foot-11 forward. With the Grizzlies, Jackson has operated mostly as a roamer, which allows him to block more shots and move around freely. The Grizzlies are afforded that luxury because they have one of the NBA’s top rebounders playing alongside Jackson in Steven Adams. “If he’s going to go block shots, he can’t get the rebound,” Adams said. “It’s not like you can do everything. It’s a give or take. You have to minimize one of the other ones to get some of the other ones.” -via Memphis Commercial Appeal / October 6, 2023
With that experience and added strength comes heightened expectations. Improving as a rebounder and remaining one of the NBA’s elite shot blockers is a tall task, but it’s one the Grizzlies and Jackson are hopeful he’ll reach. “I’m coming into my size, coming into my body,” Jackson said. “I got to be able to use it the right way. There’s really no more talk about me growing into my body.” -via Memphis Commercial Appeal / October 6, 2023
Drew Hill: Marcus Smart: “I’m looking forward to helping keep Jaren out of foul trouble for sure!” “Me and Jaren have joked about that.” -via Twitter @DrewHill_DM / October 2, 2023
