This MIT neural network translates pictures of food into recipes

The Verge

Researchers from the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have developed a neural network that can, in theory, “look” at an image and find the recipe for the food that’s depicted. It’s the latest addition to an increasing list of similar projects, following the likes of both Pinterest and, yes, Silicon Valley’s actually real hot dog-identifying app. 2017 is apparently the year of using the major advancements in AI to identify food.

John Wick’s action meets Foxy Brown’s retro style in the first trailer for Proud Mary

The Verge

With the John Wick-esque, high-precision gun ballet now pretty much established as Hollywood’s go-to action style for characters without superpowers, Empire’s Taraji P. Henson is taking the style back to the ‘70s. In the first trailer for Proud Mary, Henson plays the title character, a hit woman working for a mob family in Boston. She’s good at what she does, but it’s not long before a job goes bad and things go crazy.

Carrot adds new features to its comically malicious AI weather app

The Verge

Carrot Weather is part of developer Brian Mueller’s series of useful productivity tool apps. If you’ve never used one of Mueller’s Carrot apps, there’s one core conceit to all of them: each app features an AI character named Carrot who, to put it simply, rather dramatically hates humans. Carrot Fitness, for example, will berate the user for missing workouts and not hitting goals while threatening to destroy mankind. Carrot To-Do will judge you as a “lazy meatbag” for leaving tasks unfinished.

The wonderful mystery series Professor Layton makes a mostly seamless transition to mobile

The Verge

In the early days of the Nintendo DS, before the iPhone upended the way people played games on the go, Nintendo found itself courting an unexpectedly mainstream audience. Games like the Brain Age series — a collection of minigames and puzzles meant to sharpen your mind — were played everywhere from playgrounds to retirement homes. Middle-aged parents took their Nintendogs for virtual walks, while Animal Crossing wormed its way into the daily routine of millions. One of the series that debuted during that boon was Professor Layton... Читать дальше...

But in War of the Planet of the Apes, the simian flu flares up again, mutating to quietly spread through the last surviving people. Immunity against the original plague is no protection against the latest form of the virus... Читать дальше...

The Verge

Atari has created something new. It's a "Speakerhat." The name's self-explanatory, but let's break it down anyway. Yes, it's a hat. Yes, it features built-in speakers. It's also got a microphone and pairs over Bluetooth for phone calls and playing music. It's rechargeable, although I'm not clear on what kind of port it has. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a fan project, in the best and worst ways

The Verge

Writer-director Luc Besson encapsulates the soul of his latest movie, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, in its first three scenes. The film opens on a sweeping, centuries-long history of Alpha, a space station that’s grown from a near-present-day base into a chaotic floating city. Then the story jumps to an extensive sequence on a bright paradise planet of willowy, iridescent humanoids, about to suffer a cataclysmic fate. The forgettable title character only comes in after all this is over, and he’s introduced almost grudgingly. Читать дальше...

This transforming drone can fly like an airplane and spin like a seed

The Verge

Small drones tend to come in two distinct varieties: the ones with wings, which are best for carrying loads over long distances; and the ones with rotors, which are more agile but less energy efficient. A few drone-makers have tried to combine both flight-modes into a single design, but none have taken the approach of THOR — a new drone from the Singapore University of Technology & Design.
