As gender diversity battles roil Silicon Valley, Apple puts just one woman onstage

The Verge

Although it’s a hurdle the tech industry has long failed to clear, high-profile incidents this year have put the battle for gender diversity in Silicon Valley in the spotlight. In February, Uber engineer Susan Fowler published an explosive blog post detailing allegations of sexism at the company, an incident that contributed to Travis Kalanick’s ousting as CEO and may even inform new legislation. In June, a prominent venture capitalist was accused by multiple women of making unwanted advances during business meetings. Читать дальше...

T-Mobile announces $300 trade-in deal for iPhone X and iPhone 8

The Verge

T-Mobile was well prepared for today’s iPhone reveal, as the carrier has already publicly announced trade-in deals for Apple’s latest smartphone refresh. The carrier says it’s giving $300 to any customer who trades in an iPhone 6 or newer in good condition for an iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or the iPhone X. For those interested in the latter, extra-costly device — which costs $999 for a 64GB model, or $1,150 for a 256GB model — a $300 credit should help ease the pain a little bit.

Apple will release macOS High Sierra on September 25th

The Verge

Apple announced High Sierra, the latest version of macOS, back in June at WWDC, and early adopters have been testing out the beta version for months. It’s now finally ready and Apple will ship out the final version on September 25th. Like all macOS updates, High Sierra is free. It runs on just about any Mac made since 2009, but there are some changes to this OS that could break compatibility with older apps. Old versions of Apple’s own Final Cut and Logic programs, for instance, aren’t compatible. Читать дальше...

The Verge

Slack today introduced shared channels, a way for companies to create ongoing joint chatrooms to do business together. Pioneer DJ’s new controller has touch strips and even more pads

The Verge

Pioneer DJ has unveiled its new DDJ-XP1 controller, meant for enhancing DJ performances. Along with the new hardware, it’s also announced a new version of Rekordbox, its music management and DJ performance app. Pioneer gear is largely considered a standard in clubs and at festivals for DJs, and this controller, while not as expansive as others on the market, helps close the loop on Pioneer / Rekordbox performances with turntables, multi-players, and other devices.

Here's our first look inside Apple's new campus

The Verge

Apple’s new spaceship campus, named Apple Park, opened to employees back in April, and today it hosts hundreds of reporters as the company unveils its new iPhone X hardware. We’ve seen plenty of renders, press images, and drone footage before, but today we’re getting a closer look at just what Apple Park looks like from the ground. As is typically Apple, there’s a lot of attention to detail at Apple Park, and the company is hosting the media in its Steve Jobs Theater, a 1,000-seat venue that sits... Читать дальше...

Asia’s richest man Jack Ma dances to Michael Jackson at Alibaba anniversary

The Verge

Today’s Apple launch event should take notes from Alibaba’s chairman and China’s richest man Jack Ma, who kicked off his company’s 18th anniversary with a dramatic Michael Jackson dance. Ma sat on a motorcycle onstage while wearing a mask and outfit that resembles Jackson’s outfit on his Dangerous World tour. He danced along to the opening notes of Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” and then got into a Beyoncé-esque “Formation” with his backup dancers. He performed for a crowd of about 40,000 employees.

Why was it so easy to weaponize copyright against PewDiePie?

The Verge

Over the weekend, superstar games vlogger Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg blurted a vicious racist insult during a game of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The outburst sadly wasn’t too surprising, although PewDiePie promised to give up casual Nazi jokes last month, and it wasn’t the first time he had said that particular word. But this time, indie studio Campo Santo took the unusual step of filing a copyright takedown against PewDiePie’s playthrough of its 2016 game Firewatch.

Apple’s iPhone X will stand for ‘exclusive’

The Verge

Today’s iPhone launch, coming a full decade after the release of the original iPhone, will feature a device quite similar to Apple’s first ever smartphone. The newest iPhone, whose name has already leaked out as iPhone X, will be like the original in that it will be higher in price than most people are used to paying for phones, it will be constrained in availability due to the difficulty of its manufacture, and it will serve as a status symbol for its owners. Some will purchase it to signal their wealth... Читать дальше...

Maggie Shen King’s novel paints a picture of future China that’s not far away

The Verge

For three decades, China has been running what amounts to a huge social experiment: a one-child policy that limits each family to have only one offspring. The policy has led to a greater gender imbalance than the global average. In 2015, Beijing relaxed this policy to allow two children per family. But in Maggie Shen King’s debut novel, An Excess Male, China continues to face this real-world dystopian scenario.

Ted Cruz has been reported to Twitter for liking porn

The Verge

Um... Ted Cruz, US senator from Texas, and former Republican presidential candidate, has found himself in a very embarrassing situation. His verified Twitter account has liked a sexually explicit video on Twitter causing the two-minute porn clip to appear in his feed. It's unclear if Cruz liked the video himself, or if it was the late-night work of an aid that manages his social media presence. Nevertheless, Ted Cruz quickly became a trending topic and the butt of a raging internet joke machine. Читать дальше...

Dell’s 8K monitor is stunningly ahead of its time

The Verge

Dell’s UltraSharp UP3218K display is from the future. Usually, that’s a compliment around these parts, but on this rare occasion, I find myself ill at ease with this fragment from a time that is not yet upon us. With a native resolution of 7,680 x 4,320, this is the first widely available 8K monitor you can buy, and its sheer pixel abundance dwarfs even the 4K and 5K displays that we consider the current state of the art. It’s a monster of awesome performance and visual beauty, but it demands an incredibly powerful graphics card to feed it... Читать дальше...
