Apple has extended the period of time that customers have to finish (or rewatch) a rented movie to 48 hours. That’s up from the previous limit of 24 hours, as MacRumors noted earlier today. The clock starts when you begin watching rented content; you still have 30 days to hit the play button. Movies can be rewatched as many times as you’d like — or can fit in — during the 48-hour window.

Amazon may soon be able to deliver Shake Shack to your house. The e-commerce giant has partnered with Olo, an online restaurant ordering platform with corporate customers including Shake Shack, Chipotle, Five Guys, and Wingstop, to offer easy integration into Amazon Restaurants.

Intel is discontinuing plans to release a reference version of its Project Alloy “merged reality” headset. Road to VR reported the news today, saying that Intel made its decision over the summer based on a lack of interest from partners. In a statement, Intel said it had chosen to “wind down its Project Alloy reference design,” but would continue to invest in augmented and virtual reality technology, including RealSense depth sensing and WiGig-based wireless headset systems. IBM’s first ThinkPad debuted 25 years ago next month, with a bright red TrackPoint pointing stick and a classic design that still exists in a modern form today. Daimler AG, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, plans to offer electrified versions of all of its cars by 2022 under the new EQ sub-brand. And now the company has announced that many of those will be built in the United States.

Usually when a company releases a cheaper version of its flagship product, it’s notably worse in some way in order to justify the cheaper price and to keep from cannibalizing the original, more expensive option.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus' most obvious design change is the switch to a glossy, glass back. There was a chance this glass would be priced at or around the same price as a cracked screen under AppleCare+, but that's apparently not the case: AppleInsider confirmed today that a broken back won't qualify for a $29 screen replacement. It'll instead be subject to an "other damage" fee of $99 (plus tax).

Charging an electric car isn’t like refueling one that runs on fossil fuels. The entire process can sometimes take 30 minutes or longer, and if you’re somewhere with spotty cell service, the wait becomes even more interminable.

For industry watchers, the annual Toronto International Film Festival is one of the year’s major cinema events. It’s closer to home and more accessible than the Venice International Film Festival (which runs around the same time and spotlights some of the same films), and because it comes so close to the year-end prestige season, many studios use it to kick off their Oscar campaigns for their major films — or get an early sense of whether to launch those campaigns at all.

Apple Stores are usually faced with intimidatingly long lines on the morning of a new iPhone launch, but that largely didn’t seem to be the case today. As various reports and queuers have pointed out, some Apple Stores have very short lines out front for the iPhone 8, if they have anyone at all.

Facebook and Google, two of world’s biggest and most influential companies, pride themselves on their ad businesses. These operations generate tens of billions of dollars per year, thanks in part to letting advertisers target even the most obscure microcommunities using unprecedented sets of data. As the revelations of last week evidenced, however, that ability is a double-edged sword, one that has come back to haunt these ad-supported giants.

At its annual hardware event this month, Apple announced a new wireless charging mat called AirPower that can charge either an iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X at the same time as AirPods and an Apple Watch Series 3. At the time, we wondered if this meant that the AirPods and Apple Watch Series 3 would also support the Qi wireless charging standard, like the new iPhones. T-Mobile and Sprint’s on-again, off-again merger talks may be nearing a conclusion. Reuters reports that the two companies are now “close” to reaching “tentative terms” on a merger and could announce a deal by the end of October.

Attackers stole half the US population's Social Security numbers from Equifax this spring, but the company only notified people in September. The fallout has been swift, with government agencies looking into the incident, class action lawsuits being filed, and consumers demanding free credit freezes.

The Apple TV 4K hits stores today, but it might be helpful to know that, while the device will finally support 4K content, you’ll only be able to stream said content, not download it locally. MacRumors reports that a support document from Apple regarding the new set-top device clearly states that, while you can download HD content from iTunes, 4K is strictly for streaming. It’s unclear if that will also apply to HDR and Dolby Vision versions.

Star Trek: Discovery is the first new Trek show in more than a decade, and fans will be watching this weekend’s premiere closely to see how it manages the weighty expectations that come with any new entry in one of the most storied science fiction franchises of all time.

With the breakout success of battle royale shooter PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, it was inevitable that other studios would start creating similar experiences. One of the most aggressive has been Epic Games, which announced a battle royale mode for its survival game Fortnite, which will be free to all players starting September 26th. Epic has even gone so far as to cite PUBG as an inspiration. “We love battle royale games like PUBG and thought Fortnite would make a great foundation for our own version,” Epic explained.
