Getting earbuds to fit snug and comfortably in people’s ears is a challenge that has its own market of solutions, from expensive to occasionally odd. Sure, most earbuds come with multiple tips these days, but there are also earbuds that you boil, and even ones that harden with electricity and heat. Now a Japanese startup called Vie Style has a much simpler take on the solution: soft, squishy earbuds.

Advances in artificial intelligence are making it easier than ever to seamlessly edit and manipulate photos and images. At The Verge, we’ve already talked about this quite a bit, but Adobe keeps on coming up with new, ever more compelling demonstrations of this tech. As spotted by FastCo.Design, the company recently showed off some prototype AI tools at its annual MAX conference. They’re all being developed by the company’s Sensei unit — a machine learning division that’s previously showed off... Читать дальше...
Despite continued reports of constrained supply of the iPhone X ahead of its November 3rd launch, Apple today confirmed that its retail stores will have the device in stock on day one for walk-in customers. Well, it’ll be in stock for the first few people in line, anyway. Apple’s press release says that anyone hoping to walk into an Apple Store and walk out with an iPhone X next Friday is “encouraged to arrive early.” That’s right: the lines of hopeful iPhone buyers camping out overnight are about... If you’ve ever loved an HTC phone — and most readers of The Verge have at least one HTC favorite — then you’re already a fan of one of these two designers. The holy grail for many Apple fans, the iPhone X, has been plagued by production issues that already look to substantially limit supplies of the coveted device. Now, a new report from the Nikkei Asian Review clarifies just how much they’ll be limited: Apple will apparently ship only 20 million units this year, half of how much it had planned. The report suggests the reduction in units comes from technical issues surrounding components that are used in the new face authentication feature.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. 20 days ago, when Google revealed its 2017 Pixel phones, the talk was all about the “panda” Pixel 2 XL, the one with a white aluminum back and black glass window at the top. The larger of Google’s new Android flagships was shaping up to be an instantly iconic device with its own nickname and cult following. The “Pixel 2 XL” moniker would quickly be forgotten and we’d all talk, in beatifying tones, about the great Pixel Panda. All the pieces were falling into... Читать дальше...

All day, every day, we’re pushing buttons and thinking about the intended or unintended consequences. We’re interviewing consumers — including friends, co-workers, loved ones, and some strangers — and then... Читать дальше...
Google Lens is reportedly appearing on the original Pixel devices according to a Reddit thread (as spotted by AndroidPolice). Google Lens is an on-demand object recognition tool that debuted alongside the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL back in October. It can do useful things like recognize the type of flower in a photo or tell you the name of a painting’s artist if you point your phone’s camera at it.

Sony’s new robotic assistant called the Xperia Hello is now ready for Japanese homes. The swiveling smart speaker we first saw as a prototype last year features big animated eyes and a 4.55 inch LCD in its belly. The Xperia robot runs Android and responds to voice, gestures, and facial expressions. It can also take photos, make Skype video calls, check the status of family members both inside and outside the house, provide reminders, and alert you of news, weather changes, and road traffic. And because it’s for Japan... Читать дальше...
Microsoft says it will drop its lawsuit against the US government after the Department of Justice agreed to change the way data like email is obtained in warrants for government agencies. Gag orders have typically been used to keep data providers like Microsoft silent, and not inform customers when their cloud data has been searched or inspected by authorities. Microsoft originally filed its lawsuit last year, arguing that the government’s gag-ordered searches of Microsoft accounts violates the constitutional right to free speech. Читать дальше...
